Israel previously had “total control” over the US Congress, and it was completely impossible for anyone who spoke “ill” of the Jewish state to build a political career. This is stated by US President Donald Trump in an interview with Daily Caller published this week.

— There was a time where you couldn’t speak bad, if you wanted to be a politician, you couldn’t speak badly, Trump explained.

He emphasized that Israel had long held a completely unique position in Washington, but claimed that this is changing.

— If you go back 15 years, probably that’s when it started, right. Israel was the strongest lobby I’ve ever seen. They had total control over Congress, and now they don’t, you know, I’m a little surprised to see that.

He continued to develop his reasoning:

— If you go back 20 years. I mean, I will tell you, Israel had the strongest lobby in Congress of anything or body, or of any company or corporation or state that I’ve ever seen. Israel was the strongest. Today, it doesn’t have that strong a lobby. It’s amazing.

“Not winning the world of public relations”

According to Trump, American politics has fundamentally changed – today there are, as he puts it, “all kinds of Israel critics” and “lunatics” among the country’s top politicians.

He was referring among others to the so-called Squad, consisting of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib – a group of left-wing Democratic congresswomen who have made their mark with sharp criticism of Israel.

The president connected the changes in public debate to Israel’s bloody invasion of Gaza.

— They may be winning the war, but they’re not winning the world of public relations, you know, and it is hurting them.

At the same time, Trump highlighted his own role in the relationship between Washington and Jerusalem, true to form. He declared that “no one has done more” for Israel than himself, and described the country as “amazing”, because he himself has received “good support” in return.

One lobbyist for every politician

Although Trump claims that the Israel lobby doesn’t have the same power over American politics as before, there are many who don’t share that conclusion.

The Nordic Times has among other things highlighted how libertarian congressman Thomas Massie revealed that all Republican congressmen have a personal lobbyist from AIPAC with whom they maintain close contact and who tells them how to vote on various issues.

— Why would they want to tell their constituents that they’ve basically got a buddy system with somebody who’s representing a foreign country? It doesn’t benefit the congressman for people to know that. So they’re not going to tell you that, he states.

The Nordic Times has also reported on how AIPAC as recently as the last election boasted that almost all candidates they financed won their respective elections while managing to “stop” a number of Israel-critical candidates.

Donald Trump’s harsh criticism of Israel and his call for the country to stop bombing Iranian targets has not been well received by the influential and bellicose Israel lobby.

American-Israeli opinion maker and lobbyist Emily Schrader is one of those calling for the hostilities to continue, going so far as to claim that Trump “is in bed with Qatar”.

Although the stated goal of the Israeli and then US attacks on Iran was initially claimed to be to eliminate the country’s ability to develop nuclear weapons, a long line of Israeli and neoconservative American voices have quickly shifted focus and are now demanding that the Iranian regime be overthrown – with US help.

After Trump criticized Israel in harsh terms and ordered the country’s military to stop bombing Iran, the Israeli lobby’s anger was not long in coming – and several of the figures who recently praised Trump for bombing Iranian nuclear facilities are now trying to discredit the president and portray him as an enemy.

One of those most upset that Trump has taken a stand against Israel’s bombing is Emily Schrader, who has long been involved in two issues: overthrowing and replacing the Iranian regime and increasing US support for Israel.

The lobbyist, who has both US and Israeli citizenship, claims that Trump “is in bed with Qatar” because he has demanded that the bombings stop.

“It must be done”

She also states that Iran’s leadership must be overthrown – and claims that no other alternatives are acceptable.

“The only way to ensure peace in the region is a regime change in Iran. It doesn’t have to be done through war, but it must be done. Trump is painfully naive as to the ideology and motivating factors of the Islamic regime in Iran”, she claims.

In another angry post, she claims that “In the last 24 hours, Donald Trump guaranteed a future war”.

“They’ll discard and mock him”

Critics point out that the Israel lobby is never satisfied – regardless of the concessions and efforts the US makes to appease Tel Aviv – and that they are only interested in supporting Trump if they can exploit him for their own purposes.

“Trump literally bombed Iran – he did that! – for this country’s government. The next day, if he doesn’t obey the next order they make up for him to do, Netanyahuists say he’s part of the Qatar World Conspiracy”, says Curt Mills, executive director of The American Conservative.

“If this isn’t evidence they’ll discard and mock him once he’s no longer president and they’ve used him, nothing is”, he continues.

The Nordic Times has previously highlighted the remarkable influence of the Israel lobby over American politics – and, among other things, pointed out how AIPAC, the largest pro-Israel lobby group, openly boasted during the last election that almost all the candidates they had financed won their respective elections.

“AIPAC endorsed 362 candidates and won in every primary we had a candidate on the ballot! We helped our friends win and defeated 11 anti-Israel candidates”, they proudly declared.

Highlighting the influence of Jewish lobby groups over American or European politics is usually a very sensitive issue – and anyone who does so can expect to be subjected to smear campaigns and accusations of anti-Semitism.

On Wednesday, however, Swedish state television chose, unusually and to the surprise of many, to draw attention to the lobby groups’ enormous power over American politics, and SVT’s foreign correspondent, Stefan Åsberg, stated that these interests are in practice powerful enough to decide who will be the next president of the United States.

– These are well-organized groups with vast resources that sometimes more or less determine the outcome of presidential elections, he said, adding:

– It is also important for members of Congress to forge close ties with these lobby groups, whose task is to influence US politics and ensure that, if possible, leaders who favor relations between Israel and the US are elected.

The US has long been Israel’s most important ally and has a long history of economic and military cooperation, including supplying weapons and military technology worth billions of dollars every year.

However, according to Åsberg, the relationship between Trump and Netanyahu seems to have weakened somewhat, due to the large-scale war crimes in Gaza.

– There is a red line even for the US and Donald Trump. The US is affected by the enormous death toll in Gaza, not least all the children whose lives have been lost in the Gaza Strip. He is definitely losing patience with Israel.

All Republicans have personal Israel lobbyists

Although the Jewish lobby’s influence over the US is often a sensitive topic, it is also well documented. As recently as after the last election, groups such as AIPAC openly boasted about how virtually all of the candidates they financed won their primaries – and how they also “defeated 11 anti-Israel candidates”.

According to estimates, AIPAC spent around $100 million ahead of the last election – partly on smearing and opposing candidates perceived as pro-Palestinian or critical of Israel.

Libertarian Congressman Thomas Massie also caused a stir when he revealed in an interview with Tucker Carlson that all Republicans in Congress have a personal Israel lobbyist from AIPAC with whom they are in close contact and who tells them how to vote on various issues.

When Tucker Carlson said that this sounded “absolutely insane” and wondered why this was not common knowledge, Massie explained that none of the parties involved would benefit from these close ties becoming public knowledge.

– It doesn’t benefit anybody. Why would they want to tell their constituents that they’ve basically got a buddy system with somebody who’s representing a foreign country? It doesn’t benefit the congressman for people to know that. So they’re not going to tell you that.

The Sweden Democrats have long profiled themselves as one of the EU’s most pro-Israel parties and have worked hard to be embraced by Israeli politicians and avoid being labeled a “Nazi” or “anti-Semitic” party.

Now, all pro-Israeli efforts have finally borne fruit, with Benjamin Netanyahu’s government announcing that it wants to engage with the Swedish party.

The party’s representatives have made several trips to the country to appease the Israeli authorities. Last fall, The Nordic Times also reported how the party’s representative, Member of Parliament Alexander Christiansson, fell to his knees crying before a group of Jewish settlers.

Party leader Jimmie Åkesson has also felt compelled to travel to Jerusalem to get the Israeli government to stop distancing itself from the party, and several high-ranking SD profiles have made a big deal of the fact that the Sweden Democrats are one of the most pro-Israel parties in all of Europe.

Perhaps the greatest effort to get Israel to forgive the Sweden Democrats for the nationalist policies the party has historically pursued has been made by MEP Charlie Weimers.

The former high-profile Christian Democrat has made a series of harshly criticized statements – including a suggestion that Sweden, together with Israel, start conducting extrajudicial assassination campaigns in Iran.

– Gangs will not be deterred until we cooperate with the United States and Israel to liquidate gang leaders who are safely in third countries, he claimed, and many critics tried to explain that Swedish authorities do not usually assassinate people.

Demanded an apology for the Holocaust

In the past, SD’s attempts at relationship building have been completely dismissed and rejected – as recently as November, Israel’s ambassador to Sweden, Ziv Nevo Kulman, demanded that the Sweden Democrats apologize for the party’s “historical links to anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial”.

According to Kulman, an official apology from the SD would show “a willingness to acknowledge historical mistakes”.

– Our policy on far-right parties with Nazi roots has not changed, the ambassador explained.

– But (SD) definitely needs to do a lot of soul-searching about its own past. They need to apologize for everything they have done, to the victims of the Holocaust and for the memory of the Holocaust, and they definitely need to think about a future where they do more to fight anti-Semitism. It’s a long process, Kulman added.

“Extremely positive”

Whether the SD listened to the demands and apologized to Israel for its history is unclear. What is clear is that the Israeli government will no longer boycott the party and has decided to start a dialogue with the Swedish SD, the Spanish Vox and the French National Rally.

“The decision was made following a series of ministerial discussions, during which it was determined that these parties do not have antisemitic or anti-Israel elements. However, Israel will still refrain from engaging with parties tainted by antisemitism, such as the Austrian Freedom Party”, writes the Jerusalem Post.

SD’s foreign policy spokesperson, Aron Emilsson, describes the announcement as “extremely positive” and notes that they have “worked for a long time to improve relations”.

The news that hostages Shiri Bibas and her two small children are dead has led to calls from US politicians to further escalate the genocide of Palestinians and destroy the entire Gaza Strip in retaliation.

“Destroy it all”, demands Republican state senator Randy Fine.

Kfir Babas was just nine months old when he was kidnapped by Hamas along with his four-year-old older brother, his mother and his father.

His father, Yarden Bibas, was released earlier in February after 16 months of captivity. However, when the other family members were to be handed over in a prisoner exchange, Hamas claimed that the children and their mother had been killed in an Israeli air strike early in the war – and handed over their dead bodies instead.

The children’s identities have been confirmed, but the cause of death has not been established. However, Israel claims that the body purportedly belonging to Shiri Bibas is in fact that of another unidentified person – which Hamas explains by saying that body parts were mixed up after the Israeli bombings.

While it is still unclear how the children and their mother died, those in power far beyond Israel’s borders have been quick to use their deaths to argue that the genocide in Gaza must now be stepped up and that the area must be completely cleansed of Palestinians.

“Palestinians = Hamas”

One of these is Jewish Republican Randy Fine in the Florida Senate, who claims on X that Palestinians are synonymous with Hamas members and calls for even more bombs to be dropped on a Gaza that is already largely in ruins.

“Gaza must be destroyed” and “Palestinians = Hamas”, he proclaims, echoed by thousands of supporters.

Without presenting any evidence, Fine claims that the children were murdered by Palestinian civilians and that the entire Palestinian culture is “the embodiment of evil”.

“Destroy it all”, he continues.

While many of Randy Fine’s supporters appreciate the genocidal rhetoric, others point out that he himself has received money from the Israel lobby AIPAC and seems to act more as a mouthpiece for them – rather than representing the interests of the American people.

“No suffering is enough”

Others argue that it is very strange and inappropriate for an American politician to call for the destruction of an entire Middle Eastern people based on the tragic death of one family – and this before he has even clarified how they were killed and by whom.

Critics also note that at least 17,000 children and young people have been killed during Israel’s bombing and invasion since October 7, 2023 – and that Fine has not only failed to protest the large-scale killing – but has actively encouraged it.

Nor is this the first time that the state senator’s desire to kill as many Palestinians as possible has been highlighted.

“There is no suffering adequate for these animals. May the streets of Gaza overflow with blood”, he wished, for example, shortly after Hamas attacks and also praised the Israeli army when it shot dead an American-Turkish woman in the West Bank.
