Nearly 100,000 people attended Charlie Kirk’s memorial service on Sunday. Several individuals spoke during the ceremony, including President Donald Trump and Kirk’s wife Erika.
It was on September 10 that the conservative activist Charlie Kirk was murdered during a performance at Utah Valley University. The 31-year-old was shot in front of 3,000 students and later died at the hospital. Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested a few days later and is suspected of the murder.
On Sunday, 95,000 people gathered at State Farm Stadium outside Phoenix in Arizona, USA, to honor Kirk, a ceremony that placed extra emphasis on security. Among other measures, they had security glass on the stage to protect the speakers.
Many people spoke at the memorial service, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, as well as Tucker Carlson. All expressed their grief over Kirk’s sudden death and described him as a freedom fighter.
“I forgive him”
Wife Erika Kirk also spoke on stage and shared how much he is missed, not least by his two children who lost their father. She also spoke about her husband’s death and said that Kirk felt “no fear, no anxiety” in his final moment, but that she herself felt a grief she had never experienced before.
— I saw the wound that ended his life. I felt shock, I felt horror and a level of heartache that I didn’t even know existed, she says according to NBC News.
Furthermore, she says with tears in her eyes that she forgives Kirk’s killer.
— I forgive him because it was what Christ did and what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the Gospel is love, and always love – love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.
History will not forget
President Donald Trump also took the stage and spoke highly of Kirk. Trump called him “a martyr for American freedom”.
— I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will ever forget Charlie Kirk, and neither now will history.
Trump also called Kirk a “master” at building people up, who “did not hate his opponents,” and is considerably less forgiving than Kirk’s wife Erika.
— He wanted the best for them, Trump says. That’s where I disagree with Charlie. I hate my opponents, and I don’t want the best for them. I am sorry, Erika.
