Slovakia’s Robert Fico has once again warned that Ukraine’s NATO membership will lead to further military escalation and a major global war.
– I understand Ukraine’s wishes, it is a sovereign country, but Ukraine’s membership in NATO is just a guarantee of World War III, he declared in a video clip uploaded to social media last week.
The statement came shortly after the Slovak delegation to the NATO summit in Washington also endorsed the military alliance’s joint communique, which supports Ukraine “on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership”, and emphasizes that Ukraine’s future lies in NATO.
Fico added that Ukraine can join the military alliance only after it meets all the criteria for membership – and after all the current member states support its accession.
“Ukraine is being used for geopolitical purposes”
Robert Fico has long been critical of the way the war in Ukraine has been handled, arguing that “Ukraine is used for geopolitical purposes to weaken Russia economically and internationally”, and that it serves as a golden goose for the arms companies of the merchants of death.
– I fear that, in the name of these geopolitical goals, the West will continue to fight with Russia until the last Ukrainian soldier, and we are not far from that, he has previously stated, warning that Ukraine’s interests will be threatened if the country joins NATO, because it is the basis of a major world conflict.
On May 14, Fico was the target of an assassination attempt and was shot several times during a meeting in the town of Handlova. The prime minister was rushed to hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries, but ultimately survived the attack.
The Slovak prime minister has also previously pledged to stop providing military aid to Ukraine, instead advocating for peace talks and diplomatic solutions.
