A global IT outage has affected companies and organizations around the world, including Swedish airlines and public transportation. The problem arose after an update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike to Windows computers caused a “blue screen of death” (BSOD).
Swedish airline SAS has reported delays and disruptions to its booking system, while payment systems on Mälar trains and public transport in Sörmland, Halland and Blekinge have been affected.
– This is the biggest virus-induced outage we have ever seen, IT security expert Karl Emil Nikka told Sweclocke.
In the US, health care and 911 are affected, and major airlines such as Delta and United have canceled flights. Berlin Airport and Australian airports in Melbourne and Sydney are also experiencing technical problems. Ryanair and other airlines using Crowdstrike are reporting disruptions to their booking systems.
Crowdstrike does not yet have an estimate for when the problem will be resolved, while Microsoft and other affected companies are working to resolve the disruptions.
Swedish airports have avoided canceled flights, but are reporting delays, according to Swedavia spokeswoman Ellen Laurin. Local transportation in the counties of Halland, Sörmland and Örebro are also experiencing technical problems related to Crowdstrike.
Microsoft confirms that the problems are not due to hacking, but to a system update. Microsoft reports some success in resolving the problems during the morning, but cannot answer when the systems are expected to work properly.
