After US President Donald Trump officially designated Antifa as a terrorist organization, Hungary and the Netherlands now want to do the same. Both countries describe Antifa as a violence-embracing movement that threatens social order.
After Trump last week declared that he intends to classify the left-wing extremist group Antifa (known in Sweden as AFA) as a terrorist organization following the murder of conservative debater Charlie Kirk, the Netherlands and Hungary are now following in Trump’s footsteps, reports The European Conservative.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán says the time has come to formally classify Antifa as a terrorist organization and highlights Antifa’s violent methods and society-threatening activities as reasons for the decision.
In the Netherlands, the lower house of parliament has already voted for a motion to classify Antifa as a terrorist group. The initiative comes from right-wing parties including Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, the Farmer-Citizen Movement, and Forum for Democracy.
They describe Antifa as active in the Netherlands as well, with threats and violence directed at politicians, journalists, and students.

Orban: “Terrorist organization”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán confirmed that the Hungarian government also intends to classify Antifa as a terrorist organization.
He also highlighted the case of Ilaria Salis – the Italian woman with connections to Antifa who traveled to Hungary, participated in violent attacks, and later received a seat in the European Parliament.
— Antifa is indeed a terrorist organization. In Hungary, too, the time has come for us to classify organizations such as antifa as terrorist organizations, following the American model, Orbán said.
We will take steps to designate Antifa as a terrorist organisation in Hungary. They’ve attacked peaceful people in the streets, leaving some severely injured, then have the audacity to scold us from the European Parliament. This is unacceptable. We applaud President… pic.twitter.com/hI8SSuepwq

How Antifa will be classified as a terrorist organization in practice remains to be seen, since both Hungary and the Netherlands still lack their own national lists of terrorist organizations and currently follow the EU’s common classifications. In the Netherlands, the motion must also receive support in the upper house of parliament before it can have any real effect.
Critics warn that the proposals, if they become reality, risk restricting freedom of expression and could be used to arbitrarily silence other political opposition.
Dutch politician Geert Wilders and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán defend the measure as necessary to protect social order and combat violent extremist movements.
