Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has destroyed his country with “Marxist policies”, according to US President Donald Trump. The statement comes shortly after Canada defeated the US in the final of the Four Nations ice hockey tournament.
Trump’s criticism of Trudeau has been sharp in the past, but escalated after Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime in the NHL-organized Four Nations tournament. During the game, Canadian fans booed during the US national anthem, causing irritation among American fans and politicians.
Trudeau reacted to the outcome of the game by writing on X: “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game”.

Trump: “Justin is a loser”
Shortly afterwards, Trump was interviewed by Fox News, and asked to comment on Trudeau’s statement.
– Justin’s a loser. Always has been, Trump said, accusing Trudeau of “destroying” Canada through “radical left” and “Marxist policies”.
Trump went on to criticize Trudeau’s political leadership, saying he had failed to govern the country.
– We have a good relationship with Canada, not with Justin. Because he’s too far radical left, he’s killing Canada. Canada is doing terribly.
Trump further predicted that Trudeau would lose a possible future election if he chose to run.
– It seems that he will not run. That’s a smart move, because he wouldn’t have a chance of winning, he claimed.

Promised to resign
Trudeau’s popularity has dropped significantly since he took office in 2015. Opinion polls show a drop from 60% when he took office to only 22% in December 2024.
In January this year, Justin Trudeau announced that he would step down as leader of the Liberal Party and as Prime Minister, arguing that the country needed new leadership.
Despite the announcement, Mr. Trudeau was seen arriving today in Kiev, Ukraine, along with several heads of state and government, with the aim of providing more money and military aid to Ukraine. This is seen by some observers as a sign that he may have changed his mind on the resignation issue.

Trump’s criticism of Canada has not only been verbal. In the past, he has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and suggested that Canada should be the “51st state” of the United States.
However, earlier in February, he agreed to postpone the planned tariffs for 30 days to allow more time for negotiations.
Ottawa has clearly rejected Trump’s ideas for closer political cooperation. Trudeau himself has stressed that “Canada will never be the 51st state”.
