The Chinese container ship Green Water 01, the world’s largest operating battery-powered vessel, contains more than 50,000 kWh of batteries.
The ship began service this week on the Shanghai-Nanjing route on the Yangtze River in China. It holds 700 containers and is said to be 120 meters long.
It is powered entirely by batteries with a capacity of 50,000 kWh, but can reach 80,000 kWh if needed, reports the website NyTeknik. The batteries are of the lithium iron phosphate type.
The speed is said to be 10.5 knots, or about 19.4 km/h. Fuel savings are said to be 3.9 tons per 100 nautical miles compared to a conventional ship.
The ship was ordered by the state-owned China Ocean Shipping Group (Cosco) and built by CHI Yangzhou. There are plans to build another similar vessel.
