According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Ukraine fired six long-range missiles over the Bryansk region on Tuesday, as confirmed by the Ukrainian news site RBC Ukraine. Five missiles were reportedly shot down and the sixth was damaged, causing a fire but no casualties or other damage.
On Sunday, the US gave Ukraine the green light to fire US Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles into Russian territory. The decision has been particularly controversial, partly because the weapons systems from which the missiles will be fired, known as HIMARS systems, are considered to be dependent on US personnel.
According to CNN, US officials are also divided over the decision, partly because of the risk of further escalating the war and partly because stocks of long-range missiles are limited. The cost of a single ATACMS missile, based on previous contracts with arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin, is said to be between $1 million and $1.5 million.
– The fact that ATACMS was used repeatedly in the Bryansk region last night is, of course, a signal that they [in the West] want escalation. And without the Americans, it is impossible to use these high-tech missiles”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a statement on Tuesday during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In the wake of the missile attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a change in its nuclear doctrine, which now considers attacks by a state backed by a nuclear-armed state to be joint.
