Ylva Johansson, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, was caught on camera knitting during Ursula von der Leyen’s speech on the serious migrant crisis in Lampedusa. The incident has gone viral and led to strong criticism.
Nigel Farage, a British politician, questioned Johansson’s involvement and tweeted:
“Even Ursula von der Leyen’s own EU Commissioners are bored to death with what she has to say!”

However, this is not the first time Johansson has been busy knitting during working hours. As recently as 2021, she was caught doing the same thing. At the time, her press advisor dismissed it as something nice and laborious.
But in light of her high monthly salary of almost €22,500 and the urgency of the subject of the speech, her professionalism and commitment to her work is now being questioned.
The European Commission’s press office says it “has no comment” on the behavior.
