Christer Gardell is no stranger to using the military against criminal gangs.

Financier and venture capitalist Christer Gardell expresses concern that gang-related violence is severely detrimental to Sweden from an economic perspective. He believes that the country should consider implementing martial law to address the issue.

– We probably need to introduce something akin to martial law in the country to deal with this, he stated.

– It’s a terrible development. We never thought that Sweden would become the most gang-ridden country in Europe 15 years ago. The situation has deteriorated alarmingly fast, he further claimed in an interview with TT.

According to Gardell, there’s now a risk that investors might “choose a country with less crime and where people actually want to move”.

– I don’t think people truly grasp how serious this issue is from a Swedish economic perspective. It’s much, much more severe than the average person believes.

“No measures can be ruled out”

In addition to martial law, Gardell suggests considering lowering the age of criminal responsibility, introducing youth prisons, and criminalizing gang membership.

– The situation is so serious that I don’t think we can rule out any measures, he continues.

The venture capitalist’s perspective is that the severe gang-related violence in Sweden came as a surprise, something unpredictable 15 years ago. However, conservative and immigration-critical voices have been warning about this development for many decades. These voices have often been stigmatized, slandered, or ignored.
