Swedish police chief calls for ‘moral education’ to curb shootings.

Deteriorating safety

Yesterday, a 39-year-old father was murdered in cold blood in front of his son by what witnesses described as an immigrant gang.

Police commissioner Carin Götbland says that society as a whole must now “step up” to eliminate the shootings, and suggests that “the subject of ethics and morality” be introduced in schools from pre-school age.

The Nordic Times reported yesterday how the father, according to witnesses, intervened against an aggressive gang of immigrants in a pedestrian tunnel in Skärholmen, south of Stockholm, only to be killed in front of his 12-year-old son.

– It’s terrible, we have a situation with a lot of guns in circulation. There are so many young people carrying guns. We haven’t gotten used to it, and we shouldn’t, but it’s becoming normalized. We in the police are extremely upset and we are doing everything we can, but it is not enough, society has to do more, says Götblad in TV4 Nyhetsmorgon.

– I think we should introduce the subject of ethics and morals in schools from pre-school, where we talk about values and attitudes and how we treat each other.

Children watch real murders

When the TV4 presenter points out that the murdered father showed moral courage and told a rowdy “youth gang” that they were behaving badly – but was killed as a result, Götblad says she cannot comment on the individual case.

– It is a terrible event that shows the total confusion of norms, but also what we are dealing with very seriously, this online gangsterism that is linked to music videos and violence and a glorification among young people. They are completely immersed in it from an early age.

– Today, murders are posted online in real time and young children are consuming it. It is clear that they are being influenced, she stresses.
