Animal Welfare Sweden (Djurskyddet Sverige) wants to draw attention to the suffering and fear that fireworks cause to thousands of animals every year. Through the “Living Proof” campaign, the organization is collecting testimonies from animal owners to highlight the problem.
The debate on fireworks has been going on for many years, focusing on dangerous accidents, reckless use and its negative impact on both wild and domestic animals.
Animal Welfare Sweden points out that despite the Animal Welfare Act, which aims to protect animals from unnecessary suffering, thousands of animals are affected by the effects of fireworks every year. For example, animals die from shock caused by firecrackers and rockets, leading the organization to advocate a national ban.
– To simplify and strengthen protection, we propose a national ban for the benefit of both animals and the environment – a clear solution that creates clarity and security for everyone, says Åsa Hagelstedt, Secretary General of Animal Welfare Sweden, in a press release.
Regulations vary between municipalities
Many pet owners report that their animals become frightened, causing great suffering. Most animals have more sensitive hearing than humans, and even wild animals are negatively affected. Fear often causes them to flee from sound and light, which can lead to them ending up on roads or abandoning their nests. Birds also react strongly to the loud noises and lights.
Today, firing stick rockets and firecrackers requires a permit, a rule introduced in 2019 to reduce accidents. To use other types of fireworks, you must be at least 18 years old, and the rules vary between municipalities. For example, in some municipalities, firing without a permit is only allowed on New Year’s Eve.
Collecting evidence of suffering
The campaign aims to collect testimonies from pet owners whose animals are negatively affected by fireworks. The aim is to raise awareness and push for change. Each piece of evidence submitted is assigned a unique “evidence number” along with a brief account of how the animal is affected by the fireworks.
– By collecting animal testimonies, we create a clear picture of the suffering and give politicians a chance to act. It’s time to put animal welfare before old habits and work for a change that makes a real difference, says Hagelstedt.
