Almost half of Swedes believe that conversations at the Christmas table are important, according to a survey by the magazine app Readly and IPSOS. One in four Swedes also appreciates if the discussions get heated.
According to the survey, 65% of Swedes believe that conversations are a natural part of the Christmas table with the family. In addition, 47 percent think it is important to discuss with their loved ones, as it helps to increase understanding of each other’s perspectives and strengthens family ties through an open dialog.
– Creating time and space for meaningful conversations and discussions with family feels more important now than ever. Sharing your experiences and things you have read about will hopefully lead to both reflection and new perspectives. We are constantly working to make news available to shed light on different topics – from fashion to science and politics, says Daniel Hamrin, Nordic Content Lead at Readly, in a press release.
At the same time, 44% believe that conversations at the Christmas table are not as important and can instead create conflict and a bad atmosphere. One in five people say that they never have a discussion around the Christmas table.
One in ten Swedes say they usually leave the room if the atmosphere becomes too heated, while one in four people appreciate heated discussions.
Family and news
At the Christmas table, 54% discuss personal events and experiences within the family, while 43% talk about local events. In addition, 38% talk about national news and 28% about work or school. Around a quarter also discuss TV shows, movies and social media.
The conversations that most often lead to positive conversations during Christmas are mainly family matters, followed by leisure, finances, politics and relationships. When it comes to topics that often lead to conflict, politics tops the list, followed by migration, religion, the economy, sexual identity and climate change.
The survey was conducted between October 11 and 13, 2024 and included 1000 Swedish citizens over the age of 18.
