On Wednesday, Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell declared that Sweden is and will remain a “multicultural society”– stating that “it is a fact that no one can change”.
The Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson is not merciful in his criticism and states on the contrary that “multiculturalism” should be rejected, that Sweden is and should remain the country of the Swedes – and that the Moderates themselves are very much to blame for the way Sweden looks today.
– Sweden will be a multicultural society, because it is today. We have such large groups from different parts of the world. But we must be much clearer that when people come to Sweden, Swedish laws and values and the Swedish language apply, the Minister for Migration claimed.
In a later interview with state television SVT, Forssell went on at length to argue that the borderless mass immigration policy has brought a lot of positive things to Sweden and that there are great advantages to the country no longer being homogeneous.
– In many ways, there is much that also enriches our country. Differences. That we are not all the same, that we bring different cultures, that we have different religions for that matter, that we celebrate different holidays, the Migration Minister explained.
“Doesn’t have to be a problem”
– That doesn’t have to be a problem, as long as we manage to unite under some very important values. That’s what has not worked in recent years, he said.
Johan Forssell also stated that there has been a demographic shift in Sweden that has led to the country today looking completely different from before.
– That there are many different Swedes with different backgrounds. That people have different experiences and religions. That’s how our country is, the Minister said.
“Sweden should be Sweden”
However, not everyone is impressed by the rhetoric, and Sweden Democrat party leader Jimmie Åkesson says that the immigration minister’s statements “are both surprising and worrying” and that he seems to “capitulate to multiculturalism”.

“I honestly thought we had come further, that this harmful view had been consigned to the dustbin of our history. Anyone can see what has happened to our country!” the SD leader thunders.
“Sweden should not be multicultural. Sweden should be Sweden. The people who have chosen to settle here should adapt to Swedish norms and values and essentially strive to become part of the nation. It is unfortunate that it needs to be pointed out, but this absolutely necessary approach to getting our country in order is the exact opposite of multiculturalism”, he continues.
“Shaped by Swedes for centuries”
In a later post on X, Åkesson emphasizes that “multiculturalism has destroyed Sweden” – and that the Moderates themselves have historically been the driving force in transforming the country beyond recognition.

“We are all aware that many people in Sweden have ‘different backgrounds’. This is of course due to the policies they (the Moderates) themselves have pursued historically, and it is a reshaping of Sweden that has never had the support of the Swedish people. Mass immigration, combined with multiculturalism, is the reason why Sweden today looks like it does”.
“The fact that people ‘have a background’ does not mean that they can forever invoke this in Sweden. Quite the contrary. Our country is our country. It has been shaped by Swedes for centuries. If you come here and live here, it’s on our terms. The choice is free”, concludes the SD leader.
