The Environmental Crime Group in the Northern Police Region has been investigating possible links between three mysterious deaths in Skellefteå, where all the workers at Northvolt died after their shifts.
No explanation has been given, but during the investigation, the police have discovered another death linked to the factory – as well as a serious illness.
“At the moment, there is no concrete connection between the two events. Nor have we been able to clarify the cause the events,” the police wrote on their website.
No suspicion of foul play
Both the latest death and the acute illness occurred in July, and police say there is no criminal suspicion.
“Responses from previously requested analyses are expected to take a few more weeks. The investigation is ongoing, tips received are being processed and further interviews are being conducted,” they write, adding that they currently have no “additional information to provide at this time“.
– We have sent samples to the Forensic Medicine Agency and are waiting for answers, but at the moment there are no concrete links between any of the incidents, Elisabeth Glaas, press spokeswoman for the northern police region, told TV4.
The fact that the deaths have yet to be explained has led to much speculations and theories that the workers who died may have been somehow exposed to or ingested toxic or other dangerous substances related to battery production.
Former workers have also testified about being forced to handle hazardous waste without protective equipment and how several also suffered from a variety of health problems – including rashes, itching, broken nails, nosebleeds and sore throats.
