The Brave browser has previously allowed users to search for websites without having to go through Google or Microsoft, but for images and videos it still used the search engines of these tech giants. Now, Brave has decoupled from Microsoft’s Bing and Google when it comes to searching for images and videos, and can now offer these services entirely in-house.
In a statement, Brave explains:
“Users will no longer need to leave Brave Search for image and video search results. Now any Brave Search query can be served directly from Brave’s own index, enabling users to benefit from a fully independent search engine that protects their privacy and is censorship-resistant.”
With this upgrade, Brave says users can now also find images and videos that might otherwise be hidden by Google and Microsoft for various reasons.
This is presented as an important step towards complete independence, although Brave’s new search function is not yet as well developed as its established competitors. Nevertheless, Brave promises that it will develop more search tools over time.
Brave Search, which launched in beta in early 2021, offers a privacy-focused alternative to the dominant search engines like Google and Bing. The Brave browser blocks online tracking by default, and with its newly developed search engine, the company is taking another step towards offering a fully privacy-conscious browsing experience.
