A US military base in Germany has played a central role in Ukraine’s warfare against Russia. The cooperation, which includes advanced intelligence and military coordination, has been vital to Ukraine’s war effort on the battlefield.
According to the New York Times , the US base in Wiesbaden, Germany, has served as a hub for military support to Ukraine. The report, based on more than 300 interviews with Ukrainian and Western government and military officials, takes a deep dive into the cooperation between Washington and Kiev from the early days of the conflict through the end of 2024.
US officers reportedly worked closely with their Ukrainian counterparts to plan and carry out attacks against Russian targets. The cooperation includes, for example, detailed intelligence information, including precise coordinates of Russian positions.
Russia has criticized the cooperation, calling it further evidence of the Western bloc’s direct involvement in the conflict and warning that these types of operations further increase the risk of a wider confrontation between NATO and Russia.

CIA directly involved in the war
In the spring of 2022, the United States played a direct role in coordinating Ukraine’s counteroffensive, the newspaper further reports. The cooperation has since gradually intensified, with US officers being moved close to the front line.
The CIA has also been involved in strengthening Ukraine’s intelligence capabilities. According to the New York Times, the CIA has trained Ukrainian spies who monitor Russian military activities both inside and outside Russia.
–Without them it would not have been possible for us to fight the Russians, says Ivan Bakanov, former head of Ukraine’s SBU security service, among others.
While cooperation with the US provided Ukraine with invaluable data and resources to fight Russia, the two sides reportedly sometimes had major disagreements over strategy and objectives.
“Where the Americans focused on measured, achievable objectives, they saw the Ukrainians as constantly grasping for the big win, the bright, shining prize”, the report said.
The German government has not yet commented on the details of the base’s use.
