Food prices have increased by an average of 25 percent in just three years – but many groceries have become significantly more expensive than that.

During week 12, a boycott of Sweden’s major supermarkets is planned in protest against rising food prices. The initiative has been widely shared on social media.

Food prices have risen sharply in recent years, with a 25% increase in the last three years alone. At the same time, grocery chains are reporting high profits, and executives are taking home millions in bonuses each year.

On social media, mainly TikTok but also Facebook and Instagram, there are now calls to protest against the country’s big supermarkets.

Starting on March 17, during week 12, Swedes are being urged to boycott the country’s grocery stores, with the aim of bringing down food prices.

27-year-old Filippa Lind, a participant who did not start the initiative but is spreading information about the protest, hopes that the protest can have an effect and lower some food prices in the stores.

– In general, I wish that we get a price reduction on all basic goods, at least most of them, that people are forced to buy, she says to the tax-funded SVT.

AI bots becoming Swedes’ psychologists

The future of AI

AI chatbots' advice isn't necessarily bad - but often very impersonal and generic.
2 minute read

Instead of turning to professional therapists and seeking human contact, many Swedes have now begun seeking support and guidance from AI tools.

Psychologists simultaneously see serious risks with the development of treating the new technology as a substitute for therapy.

The trend is growing rapidly. When influencer and mental coach Alexandra Bylund shared a private text message conversation with her partner and asked ChatGPT for an assessment, the result was decisive.

“The answer? You could say it was clear. Raw. True… And it was the beginning of the end”, Bylund wrote afterward on Instagram about her divorce decision.

Her followers’ response was overwhelmingly positive. Bylund and her followers are also far from alone in viewing AI chatbots as conversation partners and guides that help them make important life decisions.

— People say it’s their best friend and best advisor, notes SVT (Swedish public television) reporter Alice Uhlin.

“Who is the sender?”

Psychologist Maria Farm sees the phenomenon as a logical consequence of societal development, despite it potentially seeming impersonal to discuss emotional life with an algorithm – but also emphasizes obvious dangers with the development.

— Who is the sender, is the first thing I think. It’s not a person who has intentions, and there can be ethical problems with that, she believes.

She points out that the advice isn’t necessarily bad, but often impersonal, general and anonymous.

— Several are good pieces of advice and I could absolutely give them myself, she admits at the same time.

“Doesn’t replace psychologists”

The effects of “AI therapy” is a largely unexplored area, and it’s highly unclear what impact the widespread use of chatbots actually has on users’ mental health.

Despite AI tools’ ability to often provide useful advice, Maria Farm emphasizes that the technology can never practically replace human professional help.

— It doesn’t replace psychotherapists and psychologists, she states firmly.

There have already been reported several cases where extremely vulnerable users have taken their own lives after relying too heavily on AI bots’ advice, which according to assessors underscores the need for caution.

The cryptocurrency bitcoin reached a historic peak of over $124,000 during Wednesday evening and now has a market value that exceeds tech giant Google’s. This makes bitcoin the fifth largest asset in the world.

Bitcoin surpassed its previous record level on August 13 when the price rose to $124,025 per unit on the Bitstamp trading platform. The new peak exceeded the previous record of $123,236 that was set just over a month ago, on July 14, writes Bitcoin.com.

The digital currency now has a total market value of $2.458 trillion and traded for nearly $59 billion globally during the past 24 hours. The largest exchanges for bitcoin trading are Binance, Bybit, Coinbase, Upbit and OKX.

Strong technical signals drive the surge

Market indicators point to continued strength for bitcoin. Both strength indices, momentum and key technical indicators signal positive development. The moving averages are also in positive territory.

At Wednesday’s close, bitcoin remained around $124,016 and dominates 58.8 percent of the total cryptocurrency market, which is now valued at $4.16 trillion. Ethereum and other alternative digital currencies have also risen sharply, with ethereum now accounting for 13.7 percent of the market’s total dominance.

Nvidia and AMD to pay 15 percent of China revenues to US

Donald Trump's USA

American semiconductor manufacturers Nvidia and AMD have agreed to pay 15 percent of their revenues from chip sales in China to the US government. The arrangement is the condition for obtaining export licenses under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to sources familiar with the situation, including a US government official, both companies approved the financial arrangement to obtain export licenses for the Chinese market, which were granted last week.

The American official stated that Nvidia agreed to share 15 percent of revenues from H20 chip sales in China, while AMD will provide the same percentage from MI308 chip revenues. The Trump administration has not yet decided how the money will be used, reports Financial Times.

Never seen before

According to export control experts, this is the first time ever that an American company has agreed to pay a portion of its revenues to obtain export licenses. However, the arrangement fits into a pattern under the Trump administration where the president urges companies to take actions, such as domestic investments, to avoid tariffs.

The Commerce Department began issuing H20 export licenses on Friday, two days after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with President Trump. The administration has also begun issuing licenses for AMD’s chips to China.

Nvidia did not deny the arrangement and said: “We follow rules the US government sets for our participation in worldwide markets”. AMD commented: “Our initial licence applications have been approved” and added that the company “adhere to all US export control laws and policies”.

Criticism from security experts

The decision to sell the chips to China has drawn criticism from American security experts who argue that the H20 chip will help the Chinese military and undermine US strength in artificial intelligence.

— Beijing must be gloating to see Washington turn export licences into revenue streams, says Liza Tobin, a China expert who served on the National Security Council during Trump’s first administration.

In a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Matt Pottinger, former deputy national security advisor, and 19 other security experts warned against granting H20 licenses. They called the H20 a “potent accelerator of China’s frontier AI capabilities”.

Nvidia dismissed the criticism as “misdirected” and rejected that China could use the H20 for military purposes.

The debate comes as the US and China hold trade talks that Trump hopes will pave the way for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Unemployment continues to rise in Sweden

At the end of July, just over 373,000 people were registered as unemployed with Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service). This represents an increase of approximately 16,000 compared to the same month last year.

The number of unemployed is increasing in Sweden, according to the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen). Youth unemployment, however, has remained relatively stable during the year.

Unemployment has increased from 6.8 to 7.1 percent in July compared to the same period last year. This means that approximately 373,000 people were registered with the employment service, an increase of around 16,000 compared to the same month last year.

Uncertainty in the global environment dampens both consumption and investments. Households continue to tighten their purse strings, which affects the labor market, says Lars Lindvall, chief forecaster at the Swedish Public Employment Service, in a press release.

Among young people aged 18–24, 8 percent were registered as unemployed in July, which is only a modest increase from 7.9 percent last year.

Young people are generally more flexible, willing to move between professions, Lindvall tells Bonnier-owned daily DN.
