In January, the government of El Salvador decided to pay water and electricity bills for almost the entire population. According to President Nayib Bukele, the aim was to alleviate the financial pressure many people experience at the beginning of the year.
After the Christmas holidays, the financial burden is often heavy for many Salvadorans. To ease the burden on households, the government decided to cover some of the bills during January, a period that many find particularly stressful.
– For January, the Government will pay the totality of water and electricity bills for 95% of the population. The electricity bill coverage will extend up to $80, and for water bills, up to $30, explained President Bukele, according to the news site El Salvador in English.
The President clarified that the support only applies to households and does not cover businesses or government activities.
– The payment benefit for water and electricity bills provided by the Government applies only to households. Businesses, commercial establishments, government entities, and shopping centers are not included he said.
Bukele is often portrayed as a “dictator” in the Western media, mainly because of his crackdown on crime in El Salvador, which has included the mass arrest of suspected gang members. However, the president is very popular with the people and was re-elected last year with 84.6% of the vote.
