Microsoft plans to invest billions of dollars this year to develop artificial intelligence, with a focus on data centers for training AI models.
Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, investment in AI has surged as companies across sectors strive to integrate artificial intelligence into their products and services. Microsoft, which is the largest investor in OpenAI, is considered a leading player in AI thanks to its exclusive partnership with the AI chatbot maker.
In fiscal year 2025, Microsoft plans to invest about $80 billion in data center development for training AI models, deploying AI and cloud-based applications, according to a company blog post. This compares with the $50 billion in capital spending Microsoft had in the previous fiscal year, Bloomberg reports.
The development of AI requires enormous computing power, which has increased demand for specialized data centers among tech companies and Microsoft has already invested billions in the past to improve its AI infrastructure and expand its data center network.
The tech giant states that more than half of the investments will be made in the US.
"AI promises to drive innovation and boost productivity in every sector of the economy. The United States is poised to stand at the forefront of this new technology wave, especially if it doubles down on its strengths and effectively partners internationally", the blog states.
