New study debunks “Ecocide” hypothesis on Easter Island

It is estimated that about 4000 people lived on the island.
2 minute read

A common theory is that the inhabitants of Easter Island destroyed their own habitat to cope with a growing population, including cutting down all the trees. Now, however, a US study shows that the population was much smaller than previously thought and that the “ecocide” hypothesis may be false.

Easter Island, located in Polynesia, is famous for its giant stone statues called ‘moai’. The island is also known for the theory that its inhabitans caused something called ‘ecocide’, which in short means widespread destruction or damage to the environment and ecosystems.

The theory goes that the island’s growing population cut down palm trees at an unsustainable rate to create farmland, build boats, harvest fuel and move the massive statues. Widespread deforestation led to soil erosion and the depletion of agricultural land, which in turn led to famine and social collapse. By the time Europeans discovered the island in the 18th century, the population was a shadow of what it had been, the theory goes.

In a new study published in Science Advances, researchers from Columbia University show that this theory may be wrong.

They used high-resolution short-wave infrared and near-infrared satellite imagery and machine learning to identify archaeological sites of stone farming, where residents grew crops such as sweet potatoes that were built with stones. The results showed that only 0.76 km² of land was used for this, far less than previous estimates.

“Not supporting a large population”

The researchers believe the farm could only support about 3,900 people, not the 17,000 previously estimated to live on the island. However, they believe the average number was closer to 2,000 people, but could have been closer to 4,000 if other foods such as fish and berries and fruits were included.

– One of the major arguments for an ‘ecocide’ was that the populations must have been very large in order to build all of the moai statues, researcher Dr. Dylan Davis told The Guardian. However, archaeological evidence does not support a large population and studies of the moai themselves suggest that a small population could have built and moved them. It just required cooperation.

Research also suggests that the island was forested around 1200-1250 AD, but that the soil had limited nutrients, making it difficult to cultivate. However, it was the seed-eating Polynesian rat that caused the tree population to decline.xccd

– When Europeans arrived in the 18th century, they found a society living within their means, growing much of their food in rock gardens in an otherwise unfarmable landscape, says Davis.

Easter Island Facts: Easter Island

Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The island got its name because Jacob Roggeveen and his crew celebrated Easter Sunday on April 5, 1722, before they first landed on the island.

In 2017, the population was about 7,750 people. The nearest inhabited island is 2000 kilometers away, making it one of the most remote places in the world.

There are over 1040 stone statues of various sizes on the island, most of which are carved from the rock of the Rano Raraku volcano. The exact purpose of the statues is unknown, but the most common theory is that they were carved by the people of Easter Island at least 1,000 years ago. They probably represented dead ancestors or relatives.

Ukraine’s ex-prime minister: US has given the go-ahead to oust Zelensky

The war in Ukraine

Ukraine's former prime minister believes that Zelensky will be "forced out" if he does not resign himself.
2 minute read

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov is convinced that President Volodymyr Zelensky will soon resign and leave the country, stating that the powers that be in Washington have already given the go-ahead to remove the Ukrainian leader.

In a post on the Telegram on June 9, Azarov wrote that the decision to remove Zelensky “has already been made in the United States” and that Washington has given the “go-ahead” for the process. He added that while Zelensky has some support in Europe, it is unlikely to affect the outcome and “hardly helps” him.

Azarov, who was prime minister under ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, argues that Zelensky will resign because his five-year term expired in May 2024. In such a scenario, according to Azarov, Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk would step in as acting president and start shaping “a new political landscape” in Ukraine.

I don’t think Zelensky will remain in Ukraine after this”, Azarov said. “He will request protection, most likely from special forces, but they will not make such sacrifices for him. The options for his future may vary”, he added.

“The process of removing Zelensky has begun”

Already the week before his latest statement, Azarov made a similar prediction, claiming that the US has “written off” Zelensky and started a multi-step process to remove him. As an example, he cited the arrest of Leonid Mindich – described as a financial associate of both Zelensky and presidential chief of staff Andrei Yermak – which Azarov sees as a sign of an ongoing power shift.

He stressed that the arrest was not carried out by the Prosecutor General’s Office, but by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office – institutions he described as “created by the US, staffed by the US, and reporting only to the Americans“.

This is a serious signal that the process of removing Zelensky has begun”, Azarov wrote. He also hinted that if the president does not resign voluntarily, he will be “forced out“. Furthermore, he claimed that US auditors had recently arrived in Kiev to review how US tax money was spent – an initiative he attributed to instructions from the White House.

Potential obstacle to peace deal

Skeptics argue that Azarov’s statements should be seen in light of his political background, as a former prime minister under the ousted president Yanukovych, pointing out that the ex-prime minister has long been a vocal critic of Zelensky and has repeatedly called for his ouster.

Zelensky’s term of office formally expired on May 20, 2024, but presidential elections have not been held due to the state of emergency in Ukraine. Moscow therefore claims that Zelensky lacks legitimacy as the country’s leader.

Despite this, the Russian government has stated that it is open to negotiations with the current administration in Kiev. At the same time, it has warned that Zelensky’s status could be an obstacle to signing a binding peace agreement, as documents approved by a president with questionable legitimacy could be invalidated by a successor.

Nikolai Azarov (born December 17, 1947) was Prime Minister of Ukraine between 2010 and 2014, under President Viktor Yanukovych. He was previously Minister of Finance and one of the founders of the pro-Russian Party of Regions. Azarov resigned in January 2014 in the wake of the Western-backed Euromaidan protests and left the country shortly afterwards.

Since then, he has been living in exile in Russia and is wanted in Ukraine on suspicion of abuse of power. Since then, he has repeatedly criticized Zelensky and the current Ukrainian government.

Kennedy fires entire vaccine committee

Donald Trump's USA

US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dismissed all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which advises the federal government on vaccine safety and efficacy.

The former members, all appointed by the Biden administration, will be replaced by new ones.

The ACIP consists of members with medical and public health backgrounds and is tasked with providing guidance to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on how vaccines should be recommended and used among the civilian population.

Kennedy announced on June 9 that the purpose of the measure is to restore public confidence in vaccine science.

– Today we are prioritizing the restoration of public trust above any specific pro- or anti-vaccine agenda, he said, adding:

– The public must know that unbiased science—evaluated through a transparent process and insulated from conflicts of interest – guides the recommendations of our health agencies.

According to information from the former Department of Health and Human Services under the Trump administration, the Biden administration’s appointments meant that the new government would not have been able to appoint a majority of the committee until 2028. Of the 17 members, 13 would have taken office in 2024.

– A clean sweep is necessary to reestablish public confidence in vaccine science, he said, emphasizing that the new members “will prioritize public health and evidence-based medicine” and “no longer function as a rubber stamp for industry profit-taking agendas”.

Prominent vaccine critic

Kennedy has long been a vocal critic of what he describes as a corrupt alliance between the pharmaceutical industry and government agencies. He has promised to reform both the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, end mandatory vaccinations, and defend the individual’s right to informed medical decisions.

According to Kennedy, the public has been misled about the risks of vaccines, while pharmaceutical companies are protected from liability when harm occurs. He therefore demands full transparency in both trials and side effects, and wants to break what he sees as the industry’s deep control over research.

Although many see him as an important and powerful voice against the pharmaceutical industry, others are skeptical that his more far-reaching reforms will actually be implemented.

Violent riots in Los Angeles after deportation raids

Donald Trump's USA

The riots in Los Angeles are now in their third day.
4 minute read

Demonstrations against federal deportations of migrants in Los Angeles have escalated into widespread unrest over the past 24 hours.

President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to the city to assist police and protect federal buildings, a decision that has been sharply criticized by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The protests in Los Angeles began last week after several federal raids against migrants without legal residence permits. The riots began on Saturday, when federal agents and demonstrators clashed in the suburb of Paramount.

On Sunday evening, the unrest culminated in violent riots, particularly in central Los Angeles, and according to police reports, protesters blocked Highway 101, set fire to cars and self-driving vehicles, and threw objects at the police.

The police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades to disperse the demonstrators. At least 44 people have been arrested since the protests began. The number of arrests is likely to rise, given the situation.

The police have also declared several demonstrations illegal gatherings after the violence escalated.

National Guard on site – sharp criticism from state leadership

Early on Sunday, Donald Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to support local police and protect federal buildings, including the Metropolitan Detention Center.

However, the decision was immediately met with criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called the move illegal and inflammatory, describing Trump’s actions as “the acts of a dictator, not a president”.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell also expressed concern about the developments and opened the door to reconsidering the police strategy: “Given the violence this evening, I believe we need to reevaluate”.

Trump has defended the decision to deploy the National Guard and called the protesters “violent, insurrectionist mobs”.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that “these criminals will be arrested and swiftly brought to justice”.

At the same time, the US Department of Defense has raised the alert level at nearby military bases and warned of further action if the violence continues.

Raids on migrants behind the unrest

The unrest stems from a series of federal raids on undocumented migrants in the Los Angeles area, during which more than 100 people have been detained over the past week, including a prominent union leader.

The background is the Trump administration’s new, tougher line on immigration policy, with promises of record deportations and daily raids on suspected migrants.

Critics say the raids have also affected people legally residing in the country, and legal proceedings have now been initiated against several of the operations.

Chaotic scenes in the city center

Reports from Los Angeles paint a picture of a chaotic and tense atmosphere. Protesters, many carrying Mexican flags, have gathered outside federal buildings and chanted slogans in support of those facing deportation.

Several witnesses describe how self-driving cars and car tires were set on fire and how bottles and other objects were thrown at police and National Guard soldiers.

International media report scenes of total chaos and lawlessness in central Los Angeles, where police have responded with tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.

Many residents are expressing shock and concern over the sudden escalation of violence, and both locals and protest organizers are now calling for restraint to avoid further clashes.

The situation in Los Angeles remains tense, and authorities fear further unrest in the coming days. The National Guard and police are now focusing on protecting federal buildings and maintaining order in the city center.

At the same time, the debate over Trump’s response and federal immigration policy continues at both the local and national levels.

Israel boards Greta Thunberg’s ship: “We have been kidnapped”

The situation in Gaza

On Sunday night, the sailboat Madleen, with climate alarmist activist Greta Thunberg on board, was boarded by Israeli forces in international waters.

The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. when the boat was on its way to Gaza with supplies. According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, the ship is now being taken to Israel instead of its original destination, and the passengers are said to be flown back to their home countries soon.

The crew of the Madleen, consisting of twelve people from the left-wing activist group Freedom Flotilla, left Sicily a week ago with Gaza as their destination. Shortly before boarding, at around 1 a.m., they reported that they were “very close” to their destination. Activist Yasemin Acar described how Israeli speedboats surrounded them:

– We suspect that this is psychological warfare and that they have planned this, she said.

The Israeli boats initially withdrew, but two remained nearby with their engines turned off, and shortly thereafter the crew sent an alarm via Telegram:

The Madleen is under attack in international waters“.

According to Freedom Flotilla, the boat was surrounded by drones that sprayed them with a white chemical substance. They also reported that “communications are blocked and disturbing noises are being played over the radio”. In a later update, a picture was published showing the crew wearing life jackets and holding their hands in the air, with the caption: “The Israeli army has boarded the ship”.

“Kidnapped in international waters”

The Freedom Flotilla claims that its crew has been kidnapped by Israeli forces, and Greta Thunberg has also shared a video clip with this message on social media:

– If you are seeing this video, it means we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters, she says in a video clip recorded before the boarding.

She urged her followers to put pressure on the Swedish government to secure her release.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has not explicitly confirmed that it boarded the boats, but wrote on X that “The ‘selfie yacht’ is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are safe and were provided with sandwiches and water, and are expected to return to their home countries“.

The ministry accused the activists of seeking publicity and added that “there are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip – they do not involve provocations and selfies”.

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is “closely monitoring the situation

Another post showed a picture of a soldier handing a plastic-wrapped sandwich to Greta Thunberg, with the caption “Greta Thunberg is currently on her way to Israel, safe and in good spirits“.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the crew will be shown videos of Hamas attacks on October 7 before they are released. He also claims that Thunberg is an anti-Semite who supports Hamas.

– It is appropriate that the anti-Semitic Greta and her fellow Hamas supporters see exactly who the Hamas terrorist organization they came to support and for whom they work is, what atrocities they committed against women, the elderly, and children, and against whom Israel is fighting to defend itself.

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation. In an email to the state television channel SVT, the Ministry wrote:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy in Tel Aviv are in contact with local authorities and are closely monitoring the situation. Should consular assistance be required, the embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will assess how we can best help Greta Thunberg resolve her situation”.
