US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledges US support to the militant Islamists who recently overthrew President Bashar al-Assad and seized power in the country.
Yesterday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that U.S. officials have been in direct contact with the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which now de facto controls most of Syria’s territory.
Mr. Blinken confirmed that the US had already “been in contact with HTS and with other parties” in the country, including discussions on how the Islamists plan to govern Syria during a transition period.
The Secretary also took the opportunity to declare that the violent Islamist group can count on the support and assistance of the United States and that it is keen to see their rule succeed.
– Our message to the Syrian people is this: We want them to succeed and we’re prepared to help them do so.
Islamic State and Al-Qaeda
Founded as a branch of the Islamic State, the Islamist group HTS was previously closely linked to the notorious terrorist group al-Qaeda, and its leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani co-founded al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria and has long been one of the world’s most wanted terrorists.
HTS has frequently used suicide and car bombings to achieve its political goals, as well as torture, extrajudicial killings and kidnappings, and in its long-standing power base of Idlib, critics and dissenting voices have often disappeared never to be found again, while strict Sharia law prevails.
However, after the terror group seized power and Assad was overthrown, several Western leaders have suddenly begun to highlight HTS as almost legitimate political actors and a positive force that deserves the world’s support and recognition.
