The UN Security Council has approved a resolution, drafted by the United States, calling for a “swift end” to the conflict in Ukraine. The resolution was adopted this week with 10 votes in favor, none against and five abstentions.
Notably, the final text did not include the condemnations against Russia proposed by some delegates from France, the UK, Denmark and Slovenia.
“The Security Council, Mourning the tragic loss of life throughout the Russian Federation-Ukraine conflict, Reiterating that the principal purpose of the United Nations, as expressed in the Charter of the United Nations, is to maintain international peace and security and to peacefully settle disputes, Implores a swift end to the conflict and further urges a lasting peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation”, the resolution reads.
According to reports from the meeting, the resolution is considered a significant step on the road to peace, something that both the US and Russia have commented on in positive terms. Russia’s representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, described the resolution as a first attempt to introduce a forward-looking and pragmatic document from the Security Council.
Nebenzia stressed that Moscow sees the resolution as a basis for continued peace efforts, and welcomed the change in the US approach to the conflict. At the same time, the Russian diplomat strongly criticized the fact that Russia’s own proposed amendments were not accepted and said that EU countries tried to sabotage the resolution by focusing instead on condemnations of Moscow.
– They attempted to flood the text with unbalanced, politicized statements that do nothing to bring peace closer but instead aim to derail any prospects for resolution, he said.

“A decisive step”
Nebenzia accused European countries of being the only international actors actively pushing for continued hostilities and opposing realistic peace initiatives.
– We call on all those who truly seek sustainable peace in Ukraine not to allow the expired Kiev prince and his puppeteers to derail the efforts being undertaken by Russia and the United States, he continued.
The US representative to the UN, Dorothy Shea, also welcomed the adoption of the resolution.
– This resolution puts us on the path to peace. It is a first step, but a crucial one, one of which we should all be proud, Now we must use it to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia, and the international community, she said.
General Assembly adopted Ukrainian resolution
However, the UN General Assembly did not adopt the US resolution but instead a separate Ukrainian resolution that is much more critical of Moscow and calls for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
Of the 193 member states of the General Assembly, 93 voted in favor of the resolution, 18 opposed it, and 65 countries – including the United States – abstained.
It should be noted, however, that General Assembly resolutions are advisory rather than binding and are usually considered a barometer of world opinion on various issues.
