According to the head of Ukraine’s intelligence service, all indications are that Alexei Navalny died of a blood clot, and there is no evidence that he was murdered.
When imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny was found dead, many Western leaders were quick to say that Russia and Vladimir Putin were directly responsible for his death – and that Navalny’s death would never be forgotten or forgiven.
Russia soon announced that Navalny had died of a blood clot – but several Western leaders openly claimed that the politician had been murdered on the orders of the Russian state in the run-up to the upcoming elections.
Now Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, confirms that Navalny apparently died of natural causes, specifically a blood clot.
– I am sorry to disappoint you. But as far as we know, he did die of a blood clot. This is more or less confirmed, it is not something we took from the Internet, unfortunately, Budanov said on Ukrainian television.
Imprisoned in Siberia
Navalny died in a Russian prison in northern Siberia after being sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges including financing and inciting “extremist activities” and trying to “rehabilitate Nazi ideology.” He had previously been convicted of corruption and embezzlement.
In the West, the sentences against Navalny have been described as purely political and a way for Vladimir Putin to get rid of an inconvenient political opponent – a view shared by Navalny’s supporters.
