Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was reportedly the victim of a suspected assassination attempt on Sunday during a round of golf in West Palm Beach, Florida. Shots were reportedly fired near the golf course where Trump was. However, no reports of injuries have been received.
If true, this is the second attempt on Trump’s life within two months.
The alleged assassination attempt occurred at the Trump International Golf Club, where gunfire was reported at around 14:30 local time. According to witness statements from people present, two shots were heard.
The West Palm Beach Police Department later confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and the FBI has also described the incident as something that “appears to be an attempted assassination”.
– Shots were heard near the golf course, and security personnel acted quickly to take the President to safety, several local media reported.
Donald Trump, who aspires to return to the White House in the fall elections, was on the golf course at the time of the shooting but was quickly removed from the scene by his security team.
Trump’s staff has not commented in detail on the incident at the time of writing but confirms that the former president is “unharmed and continuing with his campaign work”.

Second assassination attempt in two months
The shooting in West Palm Beach is the second incident in a short period of time in which Trump has been the target of what appears to be another assassination attempt.
Two months ago, a similar incident occurred in Iowa when a gunman attempted to shoot Trump during a campaign rally. Miraculously, he missed by a few millimeters, and the shooter was shot dead by Secret Service.
According to US and other media reports, an extensive investigation is underway to clarify the sequence of events and identify possible other perpetrators.
Neither the Secret Service nor the FBI have released details of the investigation at this time, but have confirmed that both raids and arrests have been made.

Despite the assassination attempt in Iowa two months ago, Donald Trump has continued to hold campaign rallies and attend public events. On Sunday, Trump’s campaign staff was quick to reassure party supporters.

Donald Trump commented on the incident in a statement on his fundraising website.

Democrat arrested
According to credible sources, a suspected perpetrator has been arrested. Most US media identify the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, based on information from law enforcement.
According to CNN and CBS, Routh, a self-employed real estate developer, has regularly written about politics and often criticized Trump, as well as shown support for both the Democratic Party and Ukraine in the war against Russia.
Palm Beach County District Attorney David Aronberg said Routh has so far remained silent during the detention hearing. Aronberg also confirmed that the suspect had a criminal record, but has so far not confirmed Routh’s identity.
– He knew enough to stay silent. He did not apparently speak to officers, he was calm. So, it looked like a person who has done this before, not necessarily this crime, but someone who has had repeated interactions with law enforcement.
