Volodymyr Zelensky asked several times to be invited to Trump’s inauguration ceremony – but was turned down. This is confirmed by eldest son Donald Trump Jr, who calls the Ukrainian president “a weirdo”.
On Instagram, Trump Jr. mocked the Ukrainian leader’s interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman earlier in January, in which Zelenskyi said he was unable to attend the inauguration on January 20.
– I can’t come especially during the war, unless President Trump invites me personally. I’m not sure it’s proper to come because I know that in general, leaders are for some reason not usually invited to the inauguration of presidents of the United States of America, he told Fridman.
However, according to Trump Jr. this is an after-the-fact construction and in fact Zelenskyj pleaded several times to be invited and had a hard time accepting that this was not the case.
“The funniest part is that he asked for an invite like three times unofficially, and each time got turned down. Now he’s acting like he’s decided not to go himself. What a weirdo”, he writes on Instagram.

Other leaders were invited
US presidents-elect do not usually invite foreign leaders to their inaugurations, but Trump deviated from tradition and sent out invitations to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Argentine President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and Paraguayan President Santiago Pena.
Trump has also long been very hostile to the extensive US support for Ukraine and has vowed to end the conflict between Moscow and Kiev immediately.
Zelensky’s presidential term officially ended last May – but he has so far refused to call new elections, citing the state of emergency during the current war.
