Newly elected US President Donald Trump has announced that former officials Nikki Haley and Mike Pompeo will not be included in his upcoming administration. The decision addresses concerns among some observers who anticipated that their inclusion might signal a continuation of more assertive foreign policies.
Nikki Haley, who served as US Ambassador to the United Nations from 2017 to 2018, and Mike Pompeo, who was Secretary of State from 2018 to 2021, both held prominent roles in Trump’s first term. Their tenure was marked by a firm stance on international matters, including strong positions on Iran and vocal support for Israel.
During the 2024 presidential campaign, there was speculation regarding the potential roles Haley and Pompeo might assume in a second Trump administration. However, Trump’s announcement appears to signal a shift in his approach to building his team.
In response to her exclusion, Haley posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing support for Trump and his team:
I was proud to work with President Trump defending America at the United Nations. I wish him, and all who serve, great success in moving us forward to a stronger, safer America over the next four years. pic.twitter.com/6PhWN6xn1B

While the full impact of this decision will emerge over time, Trump’s choice to exclude prominent figures known for strong interventionist stances could signal a shift toward a more measured US foreign policy.
