Trump bans trans women from competing in women’s sports

Trump signed the decree in front of girl athletes on National Girls' and Women's Sports Day.

Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning trans women from competing in women’s and girls’ sports in the United States.

Transgender women overshadowing their biologically female counterparts in women’s sports has been a hot topic of debate in the US in recent years. For example, Lia Thomas, formerly Will, provoked strong reactions when the swimmer broke new women’s records at the University of Pennsylvania.

This led Riley Gaines, who lost to Thomas, to raise the debate about biological males competing against biological females – and that it’s simply not a fair set-up.

However, the debate has been socially charged, and those who oppose trans women competing in women’s and girls’ competitions are often accused of being “transphobic”, when in fact it is about creating justice for women and girls. Despite years of debate, trans women have continued to win gold medals in various sports.

“The war on women’s sport is over”

On Wednesday, National Girls’ and Women’s Sports Day, President Donald Trump signed a new executive order banning trans women from competing in women’s and girls’ sports in the United States.

– With this executive order, the war on women’s sports is over, says the president, who signed the decree in front of excited girl athletes of all ages, CNN reports.

In practice, it means withdrawing the Biden administration’s guidance on Title IX, the civil rights law. Under those guidelines, schools were required to allow trans students access to school sports teams and sex-segregated facilities that align with their self-selected gender identities. The new decree will instead bar students born with biological male gender from participating in girls’ and women’s sports or using women’s restrooms.

Fraud

Furthermore, it will work with sports governing bodies, including the International Olympic Committee, to ensure that the guidance is followed in non-training environments. It will also affect US visa policy.

– If you are coming into the country and you are claiming that you are a woman but you are a male here to compete against women, we’re going to be reviewing that for fraud, said one of the officials.

Trump has also signed executive orders banning transgender people from serving in the military, declaring that there are only two genders, and banning the use of sex reassignment therapy, such as hormone blockers, for minors.

Trump imposes 25% tariffs on foreign cars

US President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose tariffs of 25% on all cars not manufactured in the US.

According to Trump, the executive order is a step to grow the domestic auto industry while providing a powerful incentive for foreign automakers to move their production to the United States.

The tariffs, which are expected to take effect from April 3, target both fully assembled cars and key auto parts such as engines and transmissions, Reuters reports.

The president says there will be no tariff at all on vehicles made in the US. A move he believes will strengthen the domestic industry and create new jobs.

Donald Trump describes his decision as the beginning of “Liberation Day” in the United States, a signal that the country will no longer tolerate what he calls an unfair trade policy.

– We’re going to charge countries for doing business in our country and taking our jobs, taking our wealth, taking a lot of the things that they’ve been taking over the years, Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

– They’ve taken so much out of our country, friend and foe and frankly, friend has been oftentimes much worse than foe.

Economic consequences and reactions

However, several analysts warn that the tariffs could have far-reaching consequences. Markets around the world have initially reacted negatively, with significant stock market declines for companies that rely on international supply chains, both major US automakers and foreign players.

According to White House estimates, the new tariffs could generate up to $100 billion in tax revenue per year, but at the same time risk driving up car prices by several thousand dollars per vehicle.

Outside the US, the EU in particular has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called the measure “bad for business, worse for consumers”, and warns that the tariffs will have negative effects on both European exporters and US consumers.

Sources: Trump may fire national security advisor

The other powers that be in the White House are reportedly furious with Trump’s National Security Advisor Mike Waltz after he inadvertently added an outside journalist to an internal chat group where US war plans were discussed.

According to anonymous government sources, the gaffe is considered highly embarrassing and risks casting a pall of ridicule over the Trump administration and they are considering firing Waltz.

The Nordic Times recently reported that The Atlantic’s American-Jewish editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was suddenly invited to the group and could read in real time the discussions of those in power about bombing the Houthi rebels in Syria.

Despite the sensitivity of the discussions, no one seemed to care about controlling who could see the plans, and it was Goldberg who eventually left the group of his own accord, drawing attention to the security flaws.

The revelation has enraged both the opposition and his own party colleagues, with many saying it is extremely frivolous and potentially very dangerous for conversations concerning the country’s interests and military resources to be conducted in such a casual and indiscriminate manner without any security considerations.

“Can’t have recklessness”

According to White House sources, the Trump administration considers the whole thing very embarrassing and Waltz, who invited the journalist to the group, is now reportedly hanging loose.

An anonymous administration official told Politico that the national security adviser’s future will be decided in a couple of days but that there are strong indications that he will be fired.

– It was reckless not to check who was on the thread. It was reckless to be having that conversation on Signal. You can’t have recklessness as the national security adviser.

Another person close to the White House is even more blunt, claiming that “everyone in the White House can agree on one thing: Mike Waltz is a fucking idiot“.

No political consequences for Trump

According to reports, at least two of Trump’s close aides have already called on the President to force Waltz to resign as soon as possible so that he alone can bear the blame for what happened before Congress, the voters and the American people.

– I don’t think there are any long term political consequences for Trump or the Administration, outside of this potentially costing Waltz his job, one of the sources clarified.

It is also worth noting that Speaker Mike Johnson and several other prominent Republicans have so far come to Waltz’s defense and publicly declared that he should absolutely not resign from his post.

US security breach – war plans shared with journalist

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Vice President JD Vance were three of the group's participants.

Jewish-American editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, thought someone was making fun of him when he was suddenly added to a secret chat group, along with what appeared to be the top US political leadership.

However, he soon realized that the chat group was real and he witnessed the powers-that-be discussing a secret military operation against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance reportedly discussed details of a sensitive bombing operation against Houthi targets in Yemen in an encrypted Signal chat – which inadvertently included Jeffrey Goldberg. The editor-in-chief revealed this himself in an article published Monday, while a Cabinet meeting was underway at the White House.

According to Goldberg, on March 11, he was added to a Signal group of 18 participants by a user who identified himself as national security adviser Mike Waltz. The group, titled “Houthi PC small group,” included profiles that appeared to belong to Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hetseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

Initially, Goldberg was skeptical, thinking at first that he had been the victim of some kind of disinformation campaign.

– I had very strong doubts that this text group was real, because I could not believe that the national-security leadership of the United States would communicate on Signal about imminent war plans, he explains.

On March 14, participants began discussing the exact timing of the military operation.

“Hate bailing Europe out again”

I think we are making a mistake”, wrote a user named JD Vance, arguing that Europe benefits more from the attacks than the US.

3 percent of US trade runs through the suez. 40 percent of European trade does. There is a real risk that the public doesn’t understand this or why it’s necessary. The strongest reason to do this is, as POTUS said, to send a message”, he continued.

Vance added, however, that he was willing to agree to support the plans if the others were in favor of an attack but added that he is “not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now” and pointed to the risk of increased oil prices.

Security adviser Mike Waltz also declared that it will be the Europeans who will pay for the attacks, and Vance expressed that he “just hate bailing Europe out again”.

I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC”, Hegseth replied.

White House confirms miss

On March 15 at 1:45 p.m. ET (according to Hegseth’s message in the chats), attacks also began against the Houthi rebels. Goldberg described checking social media at 1:55 p.m. and seeing reports of explosions in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa. The chat feed then featured congratulatory messages from Mike Waltz and others.

The existence of the secret chat group was real, Goldberg said, and he had apparently been invited by mistake, without any close scrutiny and without any of the top security officials seeming to realize he was even there. He also states that a large amount of highly sensitive information was disseminated in the group, but that he himself does not want to publish it further for US security reasons.

Shortly after the attacks, Goldberg left the chat and on the same day, Donald Trump declared on his Truth Social platform that he had “ordered the United States Military to launch decisive and powerful Military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen”.

The White House has confirmed that an outside user was accidentally added to the secret chat group but not why covert military operations and decisions were discussed in such an uncertain and casual manner.

According to the US National Security Council (NSC), the messages appear to be “authentic” but the chat group posed “no threats to our service members or our national security”.

“Stunning carelessness”

At a press conference, Trump dismissed knowledge of the incident – and instead pointed out that he did not like The Atlantic newspaper. His press secretary also emphasized that the president has full confidence in his security team.

Democratic Senator Jack Reed is not as impressed, calling it “one of the most egregious failures of operational security and common sense I have ever seen”  and calling for an immediate investigation.

– Military operations need to be handled with utmost discretion, using approved, secure lines of communication, because American lives are on the line. The carelessness shown by President Trump’s cabinet is stunning and dangerous, he continued in a statement.

Nebraska Republican Don Bacon is also highly critical, saying it is deeply problematic that the security team does not even appear to have used secure phones or been protected from outside interception.

Goldberg also stated that Waltz set up for some messages to be deleted after one and four weeks respectively a potential violation of law since federal rules require the archiving of official documents.

Others are more skeptical about the scandal, arguing that it is highly unlikely that a complete outsider and a journalist at that would be invited to a group like this by mistake. Instead, they speculate that the intention from the outset was for the information to get out though it is unclear why.

McDonald’s cheeseburgers used to recruit soldiers for Ukraine’s army

The war in Ukraine

Using fast food to attract young people to the army has provoked many.

A Ukrainian recruitment campaign on TikTok is enticing young men to sign military contracts with the promise of buying thousands of McDonald’s cheeseburgers.

The campaign has caused controversy and faced harsh criticism, while raising questions about the authorities’ recruitment practices during the ongoing war.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has launched a recruitment video on TikTok, which appears to primarily target young men between the ages of 18 and 24. An age group that is currently excluded from the country’s mobilization.

The video emphasizes that those who sign a military contract will receive one million hryvnia (approximately €22,000) – a sum that, according to the video, is enough to buy 15,625 cheeseburgers at McDonald’s.

In the video, a man stands outside a McDonald’s restaurant and asks the question “How many cheeseburgers can be bought for 1,000,000 hryvnia?”, before presenting the figure of 15,625, based on a price of 64 hryvnia per cheeseburger.

The strategy of using McDonald’s fast food as an incentive has generated strong reactions from, among others, former Ukrainian diplomat Andrey Telizhenko.

He says the strategy shows desperation and a lack of respect for the citizens of Ukraine.

– Anyone who would fall for the promise of 15,625 cheeseburgers is not going to receive that money anyway, he says, pointing out that many soldiers do not survive long enough to use the money.

Creative desperation

The criticism is amplified by social media, where users express both surprise and anger. Many call the campaign bizarre and inappropriate, especially given the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Previous reports from the Associated Press and others in January 2025 show that the country is planning reforms to include younger age groups in recruitment, which the video in question appears to be part of.

The recruitment campaign also reflects a broader trend of Ukraine trying to reach younger generations through social media, but using cheeseburgers as bait during a war creates a contrast that many find offensive.

The debate highlights the problems Ukraine faces in balancing military needs with public trust. While some see the video as a creative way to reach young people, others see it as a sign of desperation in a time of crisis.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented publicly on the criticism.
