The situation in Gaza

Saturday's protests are the largest yet.

Yesterday, large protests were held in Tel Aviv against prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of the Israeli government, an agreement to release Israeli hostages, and new elections.

According to organizers, an estimated 120,000 people took part in the demonstrations, while other media reported 60-70,000 participants.

However, it is clear that Saturday’s protest was the largest in Israel since October 7, and similar demonstrations were organized in many other Israeli cities.

According to video footage, fires were set in the square and there were also clashes between demonstrators and police. According to Haarertz, at least two demonstrators were arrested and 14 police officers were injured. It is unclear, however, how many protesters were injured.

Netanyahu has become an increasingly criticized figure in Israel – not least because of the prolonged bloody invasion of Gaza, his decision to form a government with the help of right-wing Zionist parties, and his apparent lack of effort to actually bring Israeli hostages home. The prime minister has also been accused of widespread corruption and of having unduly benefited financially from several related businessmen.

Meanwhile, Israel’s leaders are in something of an internal political crisis, with both far-right and more moderate allies threatening to pull out if their demands are not met.
