Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski recently suggested that NATO countries should become more directly involved in the war and start shooting down Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory.
However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg rejected the proposal, saying that they “will not be directly involved” in the war.
According to Sikorski, Poland could shoot down Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace if they move toward the Polish border – but the military alliance’s secretary general does not support the move.
– NATO will support Ukraine, and we have now increased our support … But NATO’s policy is unchanged – we will not be involved in this conflict. We will not become part of the conflict. So we support Ukraine in the destruction of Russian aircraft, but NATO will not be directly involved, he said, according to Ukrainian Pravda.
Stoltenberg insists that “Ukraine has the right to attack legitimate military targets on the territory of the aggressive country of Russia” – but that it is Ukraine itself that should carry out the attacks – even if the weapons and training have been provided by NATO.
He also welcomed the US announcement that Ukraine would be allowed to use its missiles to attack Russian territory near the Kharkiv border.
