US authorities should drop the charges against Julian Assange and erect a monument in Washington DC to commemorate his “heroic deeds,” independent US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a speech on Friday.
According to RFK Jr., the prosecution of Julian Assange is contrary to the American freedom of speech and press. Speaking at the 2024 Libertarian Party Convention in Washington DC on Friday, Kennedy criticized former President Donald Trump’s record during his first term.
Kennedy accused Donald Trump of “attacking” the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and the press.
– Trump continued President [Barack] Obama’s persecution and prosecution of Julian Assange, Kennedy said to applause from the audience.
– Assange should be celebrated as a hero for doing exactly what journalists are supposed to do, which is to expose government corruption. We shouldn’t be putting him in prison, we should have a monument to him here in Washington DC, he added.

Snowden pardoned
The nephew of former US President John F. Kennedy continued to praise Edward Snowden, who has been living in Russia since 2013 after leaking confidential information about global surveillance programs, many of which are run by the US National Security Agency (NSA).
– Same is true for Edward Snowden, who exposed illegal spying by the NSA, Kennedy said, calling the US whistleblower a “hero, not a criminal”.
– On my first day in office, I’m going to pardon Edward Snowden and I’m going to drop the charges, all of the charges against Julian Assange.
In an average of several polls conducted between April 22 and May 23, Kennedy received 10.5% of the vote for the 2024 presidential election.
