Donald Trump has won the presidential election and the Republicans have won a majority in the Senate – and now, according to experts, the party will also retain its majority in the House of Representatives.
With control of both chambers of Congress, it is expected that Trump will find it much easier to push through his promised policies.
Although the AP news agency, for example, has not yet declared the Republicans the winners of the House elections, Decision Desk HQ and several other analysts believe that the party has won 219 seats and that its majority is therefore secure.
In the last election, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives were up for grabs, making the balance of power uncertain until Election Day. Members of the House of Representatives are elected to two-year terms.
Going into the election, the Republicans had a slim majority of 220 seats to the Democrats’ 212, with three vacancies. By winning control of the House, Republicans strengthen their position of power in both Congress and the White House, which also creates an easier path for implementing their policy agenda.
In the 2022 midterm elections, Republicans were able to take back the House by winning key seats in states such as Washington, New York, and California. Several of the races were close, with some winners winning by less than two percentage points, and this year seven of those races were “rematches” between the same candidates.
Despite the fact that several hundred local elections were held, only about 45 were considered very or somewhat uncertain in advance. The lack of competition is partly due to this year’s redistricting, in which five states, including Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia, were forced to adjust their boundaries following federal court rulings.
