Ismail Haniya, described as the political leader of the Palestinian Hamas, was killed last night during a visit to the Iranian capital, Tehran. The information comes from Reuters, citing a statement from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Mr. Haniya was reportedly in Iran to attend the swearing-in of the country’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Tuesday. He was reportedly killed in his guesthouse at 2 a.m., in what Hamas said was an airstrike.
Earlier this year, three of Haniya’s sons were also killed in an Israeli airstrike. In all cases, suspicion has fallen on Israel, which has not commented on the incident.
Haniya, 61, topped the ticket in the 2006 Palestinian elections and briefly served as Palestinian prime minister. He was the leader of Hamas in Gaza from 2006 to 2017 and is considered one of the relatively more moderate and pragmatic figures within the terrorist organization.
