Hungary’s outspoken Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes that Hungary’s refusal to adapt to the liberal ideology that dominates the West will give the country great advantages in the future as the global balance of power shifts.
– The liberal world order is over, he declared during a speech this week.
Orbán has long been condemned by Brussels officials for pursuing authoritarian or “racist” policies and Hungary has also been threatened with sanctions and punishments for refusing to accept Brussels’ orders and directives on various issues.
The Hungarian leader, however, argues that it is in fact the Brussels regime that is authoritarian and that the EU’s policies have been extremely harmful to its member states.
– As the changes come, only those nations can be winners that can bring the most out of themselves, he said, according to Russian state broadcaster RT.
– Those who assimilate, fall into line, are unable to show their own values or discover the strength inherent in their national character will soon become irrelevant.
Hoping for Trump
The Prime Minister noted that Hungary is “the westernmost Eastern and the easternmost Western nation” and that it therefore aspires to “connect to all the economic powerhouses of the world” – not just the EU.
He also condemned the West’s response to the war in Ukraine and how, by punishing Russia with heavy economic sanctions, it had actually caused a decline in living standards across Europe – and a host of other problems.
Unlike other Western leaders who have promised to keep pumping arms and money into Ukraine, Orbán has refused to send any military aid, and has instead focused on trying to bring about peace talks and negotiations, through visits to Ukraine, Russia, China and the United States, among others.
It is also worth noting that Orbán is perhaps Trump’s biggest supporter in the EU and has expressed hopes that major changes in Ukraine will be realized after he takes office in January.
