In an opinion piece in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, Elon Musk supports the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany and urges readers to vote for the party.
According to the world’s richest man, only the AfD can save the country, and he says accusations that the party is “right-wing extremist” are outright false.
“The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country”, Musk argues in his text, stating that Alice Wiedel’s party is the only one capable of “leading the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality“.
German authorities want to ban the party in question as unconstitutional – and it is often described by the media and political opponents as “right-wing extremist”, “racist” or with similar epithets. However, these claims are unfounded, according to the tech billionaire – because the lesbian party leader is married to a Sri Lankan woman.
“The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” he writes.
On February 23, new elections will be held in Germany after Scholz’s coalition government collapsed. Musk justifies his interest in the German elections by saying that his car manufacturer has factories in the country and that he therefore has every right to form opinions there.
However, not all staff at Welt am Sonntag appreciated the inclusion of the tech entrepreneur’s opinion piece, and the newspaper’s opinion editor, Eva Marie Kogel, resigned after its publication. However, the paper’s editors-in-chief argue that there must be room for “polarizing positions” and that “democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression”.

Immigration dispute within the MAGA movement
While Musk is engaging with anti-immigration movements in Germany, there is an infighting within Trump’s MAGA movement in the US, in which the tech billionaire is playing a leading role.
Elon Musk and other tech billionaires and venture capitalists close to Donald Trump want to increase labor immigration from the developing world to the United States – claiming that this is “crucial for America to keep winning”.
American workers can leave a company. Imported H1B workers can’t. Tech wants indentured servants, not “high-skilled” workers. https://t.co/MRQc0zLjaT

However, more conservative and anti-immigration figures who support Trump argue that American jobs should go to American workers – not people from the other side of the world.
They point out that the influential tech moguls around Trump are mostly interested in maximizing their own profits by importing low-paid workers with limited rights.
“The tech industry wants indentured servants, not ‘high-skilled’ workers”, argues conservative pundit Ann Coulter, for example.
