Hillary Clinton: Spreading “Russian propaganda” should lead to prosecution

Hillary Clinton has suggested that US citizens who spread so-called Russian-backed pro-Trump propaganda should be prosecuted. The statement was made as Attorney General Merrick Garland accused Russian state broadcaster Russia Today of “funding and spreading propaganda” in the US.

In an appearance on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, Hillary Clinton raised the issue of Russian interference in US elections. She expressed concern that the US is not doing enough to counter “foreign election interference”, particularly Russian interference.

– I think it’s important to indict the Russians, just as Muller indicted a lot of Russians who were engaged in direct election interference and boosting Trump back in 2016”, Clinton said referring to the indictments brought against Russian citizens and companies for alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election – indictments that in most cases went nowhere and were later dropped for lack of evidence.

Clinton also highlighted that US citizens may be involved in spreading such propaganda.

– But I also think there are Americans who are engaged in this kind of propaganda. And whether they should be civilly or even in some cases criminally charged is something that would be a better deterrence.

Observes the spread of Russian propaganda

The backdrop to the discussion is Attorney General Garland’s allegations that the Russian news network Russia Today (RT) has spent nearly $10 million to fund and use a Tennessee-based company to disseminate content favorable to the Russian government.

According to Hillary Clinton, Russia has a clear strategy to exploit American citizens, both consciously and unconsciously, to spread its propaganda. She also expressed concern that some Republicans in Congress “parrot Russian talking points”.

– Republicans go to the floor of the Congress and they parrot Russian talking points, she said, without providing any further evidence to support her claims.

US intelligence officials have warned that Russia is trying to influence US voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with reports suggesting that Russia is increasingly targeting social media influencers in the US to “spread their message”.

Hillary Clinton concluded by commenting on Trump’s rhetoric and how it is covered in the media. She said that Americans are becoming desensitized to his statements, but that she also believes that more and more people are rejecting the “chaos that he represents”.
