15 people were killed and at least 35 injured when a larger vehicle plowed through New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans. The attack is reported to have been carried out by Muslim Shamsud-Din Jabbar, but the FBI believes he did not act alone.
After driving into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, Jabba also began shooting at police and emergency personnel at the scene – before being shot dead himself. And the US intelligence community believes that several other people were also involved in the terror attack.
– We do not believe Jabbar was solely responsible, the FBI press officer confirmed to reporters yesterday.
The militarily equipped terrorist drove a Ford pickup truck into the crowd and a flag of the jihadist terror group Islamic State was also found in the vehicle – leading to speculation that he belonged to or at least was inspired by the infamous group in question.
Long-standing background in the army
“After hitting the crowd, he exited the vehicle and fired upon local law enforcement. Law enforcement returned fire, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital“, according to the FBI.
Shamsud Din-Jabbar is a US citizen and resident of Texas. He is reported to have a 13-year background in the US Army – including as an HR specialist and information technology specialist and has served in Afghanistan. According to friends, he converted to Islam at a young age – but became radicalized more recently.
One reason the FBI does not believe Jabbar acted alone is that it says it has reviewed surveillance video allegedly showing several individuals placing potential explosive devices shortly before the vehicle attack, and it is now trying to identify and arrest those individuals.
