China’s president and leader, Xi Jinping, says it is high time for the war between Israel and Hamas to end and for a peace conference to be organized as a matter of urgency.
– War should not go on forever. Justice should not be forever absent, Xi said, according to CNN, stressing that it is important for the peace conference to be as “broad” as possible.
During the speech, which was addressed to Arab leaders, he also announced that China supports “full membership for Palestine in the United Nations” – a stance that is not popular in Israel.
In his speech, Xi hailed a “common desire for a new era in China-Arab relations” and said their relationship could be a “model for maintaining peace and stability in the world”.
– In this turbulent world, peaceful relations are based on mutual respect, and lasting security is built on fairness and justice, the Chinese leader continued.
Recently, China has put a lot of emphasis on strengthening ties with countries in the Middle East. Just last year, it acted as a mediator to ease tensions between wahhabi Saudi Arabia and shiite Iran, which have long had a very hostile relationship.
