Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left Syria after the capital Damascus fell to the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other opposition forces. According to Russian sources, Assad and his family have been granted asylum in Moscow, after negotiating his departure.
The jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by a former al-Qaeda commander, launched a surprise offensive from Idlib province last week. The offensive resulted in the Syrian army losing control of major cities such as Aleppo, Hama, Homs and Al-Qusayr. Several other opposition groups and militias also took the opportunity to expand their territories. This led to the unopposed capture of the capital Damascus.
“The great Syrian revolution has moved from the stage of struggle to overthrow the Assad regime to the struggle to build a Syria together that befits the sacrifices of its people”, HTS said in a statement.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad al-Jalali announced that he remains in the country and is ready to cooperate with a new leadership elected by the people.
Russia’s foreign ministry confirmed that Assad had left his post and stressed that Moscow was not involved in the negotiations. Russian military bases in western Syria have been put on high alert, but are not reported to be under threat.
Internationally, reactions have been mixed. Iran’s foreign ministry stressed the importance of avoiding external interference and allowing the Syrian people to shape their own future, while Afghanistan’s Taliban leaders congratulated the HTS for removing what they see as a “factor of conflict and instability” in the region.
The fall of Assad has not only reshaped the balance of power in Syria but also affected regional dynamics, particularly in relation to Israel and Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that the overthrow of the Syrian government is a result of Israel’s military action against Iran and Hezbollah. At the same time, Israeli troop movements in the Golan Heights have raised questions about further regional instability.
– This is a historic day in the history of the Middle East. The Assad regime is a central link in Iran’s axis of evil: this regime has fallen, said Netanyahu.
