Only about six in ten Americans believe Joe Biden was fairly elected president in 2020, indicating declining confidence in his legitimacy as he runs for re-election this year, according to a new Washington Post poll.
The poll, conducted last month by The Washington Post and the University of Maryland, found that only 62% of American adults believe Joe Biden was legitimately elected president. That compares with 69% when the same question was asked two years ago.
Some 31% of Republican voters believe Biden was legitimately elected, down from 39%. The percentage of independent voters who say the 2020 election results were valid dropped from 72% to 66%. Even among Democrats, confidence in Biden’s legitimacy is down to 91 from 94 percent.
The Washington Post/University of Maryland survey shows that about one-third of US adults believe Joe Biden was not legitimately elected president in 2020. Democrats mostly believe in his legitimacy, while Republicans have seen a drop in belief. This new… https://t.co/FjbJbnqBTt

Biden lags behind
The poll comes at a time when Joe Biden is trailing Donald Trump in most opinion polls ahead of the 2024 presidential election. This is despite the fact that his Republican arch-rival is accused of various crimes in four separate criminal cases.
The poll’s findings also follow three years of media coverage – overwhelmingly loyal to the Democrats – defending Joe Biden’s election victory and dismissing Donald Trump’s allegations of voter fraud as completely unfounded.
With public frustration rising over issues such as illegal immigration and high inflation, Biden’s re-election campaign is largely focused on portraying Trump as a threat to democracy.
Softening attitudes toward Trump
However, voters’ attitudes toward Trump’s role in the January 2021 Capitol incident are softening, according to the survey. Only 37% of US adults believe the ex-president bears “a great deal of responsibility for what happened”, down from 45% when the same question was asked a week after the incident.
Mr. Biden has also expressed frustration with polls that show he receives low ratings from voters for his economic policies. He says this is a result of negative media coverage, not the policies themselves.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in media interviews Tuesday that Biden has accomplished more in three years than other presidents have in eight.
“We get that it’s gonna take a little bit of time for folks to feel what the Bidenomics has been able to do”, she said.
