More than two-thirds of American voters say Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race because of his advanced age and failing mental health.

The incumbent president is seen as having made a substandard and very confused impression during the presidential debate two weeks ago, and even among Biden’s own supporters, a majority now believes he should step aside and end his campaign, according to a poll conducted by ABC News, The Washington Post and Ipsos.

At the same time, according to the poll, the top of the ticket remains very even, with 46% saying they would still vote for Biden versus 47% for Trump if the election were held today.

Kamala Harris is seen as slightly more popular than Biden, and if the vice president were to replace him as the Democratic nominee, 49% of respondents would vote for her instead – compared with 46% for Trump.

Strong polarization

In addition to the 67% who say Biden should drop out of the race, 85% say he is too old to serve a second term as president – compared to 68% just over a year ago.

In addition, only 14% believe Biden has the mental acuity to be effective as president and 13% believe he has the physical ability to do the job.

It should be noted that neither president is particularly popular, according to the survey, and a large share of voters perceive both as dishonest and untrustworthy. While Trump is seen as significantly more physically and mentally fit than Biden, some 40% of voters say neither has the mental acuity or physical health to be president.

A clear majority – 60% – also say Trump is too old to serve a second term.
