Sweden’s increased repatriation grant deemed insufficient by Somalis

Population replacement in the West

In order for the grants to attract Somalis to leave the country, they must be able to "lay the foundations for a long-term livelihood", it is argued.

SEK 600,000 (€55,000) in repatriation aid for voluntarily leaving the country is far too low an amount for many of the country’s Somalis. That is the assessment made by the chairman of the Somaliland National Association after speaking with its members about the matter.

Already last autumn, the Moderate-led government declared its intention to significantly increase the financial support for migrants who voluntarily return to their home countries – from SEK 10,000 (€900) to 350,000 (€32,000).

Further details have now been presented, including that a couple can receive up to half a million SEK to leave Sweden, and that families can be granted even higher tax-funded sums than that – up to SEK 600,000 (€55,000).

– Voluntary repatriation creates opportunities for individuals to make a new start in life and can lead to economic and labor force growth in another country, argues Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M) in a press release.

“Long-term livelihood”

To prevent abuse, the idea is that those who accept the aid but then remain hidden in Sweden or later return could be required to repay the money.

Despite the significant increase in the aid amount, it is still expected to have limited impact. The Somaliland National Association has asked its members about the issue and concluded that the willingness to voluntarily leave Sweden remains very low and that this is due to purely economic reasons.

– I don’t think 600,000 for an entire family is enough of an incentive. Most of those we interviewed mentioned significantly higher amounts in order to be able to lay the foundations for a long-term livelihood, says chairman Mustafa Ismail.

Want to see focus on education

The Somali interest group also does not think it is a good idea to pay out the money as a lump sum as long as the migrants who leave the country are not also given help to start their own businesses in their home countries.

– Instead of giving money to individuals, we should look at investing in entrepreneurship, Ismail continues, calling on the Swedish government to focus on developing training programs in professions and industries that are considered necessary in Somaliland.

Ismail also emphasizes that comprehensive voluntary repatriation can only take place if the process is carefully coordinated with the country that will receive the migrants.

Somaliland is a self-proclaimed republic in north-western Somalia with its own government, currency and security force that has operated as a de facto independent state since 1991, but lacks international recognition.

The majority of the population of Somaliland belongs to the Isaaq, Gadabuursi and Dhulbahante Somali clans and the different clans are often in complex and protracted conflicts with each other or other clans in Somalia.

The conflicts are usually about power, natural resources and influence, and about different clans claiming historical rights to specific areas that are currently controlled by other family networks - in principle, however, all are ethnic Somalis and share the same language, religion, culture and historical origins.

Despite promises – Sweden grants second-highest EU citizenships per capita

Sweden continues to stand out as one of Europe’s most borderless and generous countries when it comes to granting citizenship to migrants.

According to recent Eurostat statistics, Sweden grants the most citizenships per capita in the EU, apart from tiny Luxembourg. This is despite the ruling coalition parties (Tidö) promising a “paradigm shift” in immigration policy.

In 2023, Spain granted the most citizenships in absolute terms, with over 240,000 new passports, followed by Italy (214,000) and Germany (200,000). But when the numbers are put in relation to the size of the population, the picture changes dramatically.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with a population of just 680 000, tops the list with 8.8 citizenships per thousand inhabitants, followed by Sweden in second place with 6.4. Spain comes third with 5.0, and Italy drops to fifth place with 3.6.

Sweden also stands out in naturalization rates – the percentage of foreign nationals living in the country who are granted citizenship. At 7.9%, Sweden topped the EU in 2023, meaning that almost eight out of every hundred foreign nationals in the country became Swedish citizens. Romania followed with 5.9% and Italy with 4.1%. The EU average, by comparison, was 2.6%.

It is worth noting that the Tidö parties campaigned on a tougher immigration policy and have promised to tighten citizenship rules, including extending the period of residence from the current five years to at least eight years, as well as introducing requirements for Swedish language skills and a declaration of loyalty. Despite this, 66,000 citizenships were granted in 2024, according to the Migration Agency, only a marginal decrease from 68,000 the year before.

Internal frustration

The lack of concrete measures to stop mass migration has led many Sweden Democrats to react with frustration – even high-ranking ones.

Last November, for example, Member of Parliament Josef Fransson called for a moratorium on citizenship in a written question to the government, stating that “despite the mandate we received from the voters, Sweden continues to hand out citizenship generously to foreigners who do not meet the requirements stipulated in the Tidö Agreement“.

He pointed out that the number of new citizenships granted during the Moderate-led government’s rule in 2023 corresponded to the entire population of Skövde.

Questions about the Moderates’ intentions

In January 2025, the report “Stricter requirements for Swedish citizenship” was presented, proposing a longer period of residence and requirements for self-sufficiency. However, the reforms are not expected to enter into force until June 1, 2026, which means that Sweden will continue to follow the current more generous rules until then.

However, many observers question what effect the proposed changes will actually have in practice. Critics stress that Sweden continues to experience large-scale mass migration, and that the government should rather focus on ambitious re-immigration programs to tackle immigration-related problems.

Several observers have also questioned whether the Moderates and the other liberal parties in government have any genuine desire to change Sweden’s migration policy course. Critics say it is largely a matter of rhetoric and symbolic gestures – in order to retain power, not lose voters and maintain cooperation with the Sweden Democrats, on whose support the government depends.

Most new citizenships per capita in the EU (2023)

1. Luxembourg – 8.8 (per 1000 inhabitants)

2. Sweden – 6.4

3. Spain – 5.0

4. Belgium – 4.7

5. Italy – 3.6

British pupils in minority at one in four schools

Population replacement in the West

In 72 schools, there are no longer any white pupils at all - and in hundreds of others, there are only a small number of white pupils.

White British children are now in the minority in a quarter of all schools in England, according to an analysis by The Telegraph based on official school statistics from early 2025.

Of the more than 21,500 schools included in the statistics, 72 have no white pupils at all, while in another 454 schools they make up less than two percent of the student body.

The demographic transformation is most noticeable in the country’s larger cities. At Rockwood Academy in Birmingham, none of the school’s 1,084 pupils were registered as “white British”, according to the newspaper. At Loxford School in Redbridge, east London, only 12 of the school’s 2,779 pupils were white British.

The trend is particularly prominent in areas such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, and Leicester. In London, white British children are in the minority in all but one of the 32 boroughs Bromley where they account for 50.3 percent of the population. In Newham and Harrow, the corresponding figures are as low as five and seven percent, respectively.

The school census data demonstrates that the white British share of the young population is in decline in many areas”, writes the newspaper.

“A nation of strangers”

Recently, The Nordic Times drew attention to another British report that predicts that white Britons as a group will be in the minority in the UK as early as the beginning of the 2060s. The forecast is based on analyses of migration, birth rates, and mortality, and indicates that the proportion of white Britons could decline from around 73 percent today to around 33.7 percent by the end of the century.

The study was conducted by Professor Matt Goodwin at Buckingham University. He believes that this development raises “deep questions about Britain’s ability to absorb and manage this scale of demographic change“.

Goodwin also warns that the trend is likely to cause “considerable anxiety, concern and political opposition” among voters – something he believes the country must actively address to avoid “considerable political turbulence and polarisation in the years and decades to come”.

– By the end of this century, most people on these islands will not be able to trace their roots in this country back more than one or two generations. This raises enormous questions about our leaders’ ability to bring people together around a common identity, values and culture, and avoid the risk of becoming what Sir Keir Starmer called in May ‘a nation of strangers’“, he notes.

White Britons will be in the minority in 40 years

A new report predicts that white Britons will be a minority in Britain within four decades.

By analyzing migration, birth rates and mortality by the end of the century, researchers conclude that the proportion of white Britons could fall from today’s 73% to 57% by 2050 – and fall below 50% by 2063.

The research is led by Professor Matt Goodwin of Buckingham University. According to the analysis, the proportion of white British people could fall as low as 33.7% by the end of the century.

Meanwhile, the proportion of foreign-born and second-generation immigrants is expected to rise from less than 20% to 33.5% within the next 25 years. By 2100, it is estimated that six out of ten UK residents will either have been born abroad or have at least one immigrant parent. The Muslim population, currently around 7%, is expected to grow to 11.2% in 25 years, reaching 19.2% by the turn of the century.

Professor Goodwin, also an honorary professor at Kent University, stresses that the research is based on data from the UK Office for National Statistics and the 2022 census. He says the projections raise “deep questions about Britain’s ability to absorb and manage this scale of demographic change“.

According to him, the development risks raising “considerable anxiety, concern and political opposition” among voters who advocate reducing immigration to preserve “the symbols, traditions, culture and ways of life of the traditional majority group“.

“A nation of strangers”

– Their concerns will need to be acknowledged, respected and addressed if Britain is to avoid considerable political turbulence and polarisation in the years and decades to come, he stresses.

The report is published in the wake of record net migration of 906,000 under the ostensibly Conservative Tory government in 2023. Meanwhile, Labour has unveiled a White Paper in June with proposals to restrict migrants’ rights to live, work and study in the country but many are skeptical that politicians really have the will to stop, or even slow down, mass migration.

– By the end of this century, most people on these islands will not be able to trace their roots in this country back more than one or two generations. This raises enormous questions about our leaders’ ability to bring people together around a common identity, values and culture, and avoid the risk of becoming what Sir Keir Starmer called in May ‘a nation of strangers’, the researcher stresses.

The 2022 census already revealed that whites have become a minority in major British cities such as London and Birmingham. London in particular has been ruled for the past 10 years by the British-Pakistani mayor Sadiq Khan who himself is very much in favor of mass immigration from the Third World.

– Our capital’s diversity is our greatest strength, he said a few years ago, expressing disappointment that this diversity was not celebrated wholeheartedly enough – and that many of London’s streets and public spaces still bore names associated with the colonial era.

Swedish Social Democrats: Population must be mixed

The Swedish Social Democrats have concluded that integration efforts over the past few decades have not yielded the desired results.

The party now wants to focus on mixing the population and ensuring that newly arrived migrants are spread out and placed in “socioeconomically stronger” areas.

At the Social Democratic Party congress this weekend, the party presented a new migration and integration policy program for the upcoming elections, with a strong focus on social engineering and mixing people from different backgrounds in the same residential areas.

– It is important from a socioeconomic perspective to achieve diversity, claims Social Democratic Party executive Jonas Attenius in the tabloid Aftonbladet.

Decades of unrestricted mass immigration have led to the creation of ethnic enclaves and areas in many parts of Sweden that are completely dominated by people with non-European backgrounds.

The Social Democrats themselves have been driving forces behind this development and have ignored alarms and warnings from critics – but now claim that the situation is unsustainable and that the solution is instead large-scale, nationwide mixing.

– We are serious about breaking segregation and using housing policy as a driving force in this work, declares Lawen Redar, who has been working on developing the party’s new integration policy.

Preventing moves to “vulnerable areas”

To achieve this, asylum seekers will no longer have the right to arrange their own housing, and municipalities will be prohibited from placing migrants in so-called “vulnerable areas” – residential areas where many non-European immigrants already live.

Furthermore, moving to these immigrant-dense areas will also be restricted by making those who move there risk losing their social benefits. Instead, migrants will be placed in “socioeconomically stronger” areas around the country.

– We have legislation that requires us to place people, and it is not God-given that it always has to be in a suburb. But this presupposes strict migration, that it is at a very low level, says Jonas Attenius, chairman of the municipal council in Gothenburg and newly elected member of the Social Democrats’ executive committee.

He confirms that mixing is a stated and very important goal for the Social Democrats, but believes that it may take time.

– Yes, we need to mix the population in the long term. I usually say ‘in a generation’. This is a long-term goal.

“No problems whatsoever”

– It is important to use our housing construction to achieve this mix. The way we live is also segregated. In one place there are rental properties, in another there are villas and condominiums. We want to work on building a mix, Attenius continues.

He believes that voters will welcome the explicit mixing policy and takes the opportunity in the gossip magazine to apologize to the migrants who have been placed in Swedish suburbs in recent decades.

– I say sorry to them. Sorry for what we’ve done. Now it’s time for the full force of society to step in. If a refugee family moves into an apartment building where people who’ve lived in Sweden their whole lives also live, and five blocks away another newly arrived family moves in — I don’t think that will be any problem whatsoever, he assesses.

No “paradigm shift” yet

Mass immigration to Sweden has been extremely extensive in recent decades – according to statistics from the Swedish Migration Agency, nearly 2.5 million people have immigrated in the 2000s alone – leading to a long list of difficult problems.

Regardless of whether the Social Democrats or the Moderates have governed Sweden, the policy of population replacement has continued, and anyone who opposed it could long expect to be subjected to smear campaigns or character assassination in the establishment media.

However, the success of the Sweden Democrats has led to a rhetorical shift among the other parties, and today both the Social Democrats and the Moderates claim that they want to see a limited migration policy. In practice, however, not much has happened, and despite the government’s promises of a “paradigm shift in migration policy”, 94,000 residence permits were granted last year.
