Sweden’s foreign minister says Swedes “need to prepare for a long-term confrontation with Russia” and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte calls for “everyone to do more” to help Ukraine militarily.
Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard (M), is currently attending the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels, where the possibility of further increasing funding and arms deliveries to Ukraine is one of several issues to be discussed
Cooperation between NATO and countries in North Africa and the Middle East is also on the agenda, where Jordan’s King Abdullah II will be present.
On December 3-4, Maria Malmer Stenergard will participate in the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels. The meeting aims to prepare for the NATO summit in The Hague next summer and the agenda includes support for Ukraine and cooperation with countries in North Africa and the Middle East.
As usual, there is also a lot of focus on the alleged threat from Russia, and Malmer Stenergard believes that the Swedes must prepare for a very protracted conflict with Moscow.
– We need to prepare for a long-term confrontation with Russia. Our goal now is to counter Russia’s ability to do harm. Russian propaganda gives the impression that Russia’s economy is strong and resilient to portray sanctions as ineffective. Sweden has taken the initiative to counter this false image, she said in a press release.
Negotiations on the horizon
Why all the focus is on escalation and continued conflict and why diplomacy, dialogue and peace talks are not a viable option is not clear.
It is also notable that the new NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, is demanding that member states devote even more resources to fighting Russia than before, and there seems to be no limit to support for Ukraine.
– We will all need to do more. The stronger our military support to Ukraine is now, the stronger their hand will be at the negotiating table, Rutte said, according to Reuters.
– Putin is not interested in peace. He is pressing on, trying to take more territory. Because he thinks he can break Ukraine’s resolve and ours, but he is wrong, he added.
