Over the past nine years, more than 60,000 pupils in grade 9 have failed the reading comprehension test. The largest increase occurred between 2018 and 2022.
Since 2014, 61,972 ninth-grade students have failed reading comprehension in the national exams, according to figures from the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) reviewed by taxpayer-funded SVT.
During the 2014/2015 school year, 8,226 students failed, followed by 6,308 students the following year. The largest increase occurred between the 2017/2018 school year, when 5,695 students failed reading comprehension, and 2021/2022, when the number rose to a staggering 17,574.
However, during the last school year, the number of failing students dropped to 8,270.
– That we are not succeeding with more students can only be seen as a major betrayal, says middle school teacher and debater Fredrik Sandström to SVT.
“Functional illiterates”
In the latest PISA survey, a sharp deterioration in the knowledge of Swedish 15-year-olds was noted, especially in mathematics and reading comprehension. About one in four ninth graders did not reach the basic level in reading comprehension.
– The fact that we have 25 percent coming into adulthood who are basically functionally illiterate is a big problem, says Sandström.
University teachers at top programs in Skåne have also raised the alarm that the literacy of adult students has deteriorated significantly. The teachers’ union has also expressed concern about the decline in reading skills among students of different ages and is calling on the government to take action to tackle the problem.
