The alleged terrorist denies any wrongdoing.

Last wednesday, a man was arrested on suspicion of committing a terrorist crime in the Stockholm area in August. However, neither the prosecutor nor the security police will reveal any details about the case or even say whether anyone was injured in connection with the crime.

It was Telia-owned TV4 News that first confirmed that Säpo, the Swedish security police, had arrested a suspected terrorist on Wednesday and that the crime itself had been committed sometime last month, but they would not give any more details than that.

– The case has been ongoing for some time … it is true that a person is in custody and it concerns one of our operational areas, Gabriel Wernstedt of the Swedish Security Service press office told the broadcaster.

–  A person was arrested in the Stockholm area on Wednesday, September 4. The person is suspected of terrorist crimes. The case is not related to any other case in the Security Service.

Mats Ljungqvist, prosecutor at the National Security Service, does not wish to comment further.

– The crime took place in August 2024 in the Stockholm area. I don’t want to go into what it’s about. There is pre-trial secrecy.

Denies crime

He also does not want to answer whether anyone died or was injured in connection with the terrorist crime, and cannot comment more precisely on where it took place.

According to Säpo, the investigation is at a “very early stage”, but at least they assure that there is “no danger to the public related to the case” at the moment.

The suspect denies any wrongdoing and by tomorrow at the latest the prosecutor will decide whether or not to arrest him.

– We are now working intensively with the investigation, says Mats Ljungqvist.

Swedish police reticent on mass shooter details

Deteriorating safety

Roberto Eid Forest, police area commander in Örebro and a blurred image of a person who could be the shooter.

Police are keeping a tight lid on the details of the shooter in Örebro – but say there is currently no indication that he acted with ideological motives.

According to the Police Authority, at least 11 people were killed in yesterday’s shooting at Campus Risbergska, an adult education campus in Örebro. The perpetrator is said to be among the deceased – reportedly taking his own life after the attack. The shooter is described as being in his mid-30s and a resident of Örebro.

– He is not previously known to the police and has no connection to any gang. What we believe is that it is a lone perpetrator, I want to emphasize that the situation can change, said Police Area Commander Roberto Eid Forest, during a press conference.

The person the police believe is the suspect is among the deceased. We do not yet know the motive for the school shooting in Örebro, but everything indicates that the perpetrator has acted alone without an ideological motive”, they wrote in a press release.

“False narratives” are being spread

The police will not comment further on the shooter’s background or identity – something that has quickly led to countless speculations on forums and social media where several people have been wrongly identified as the perpetrator.

The police also warn that “false narratives” are being spread on the internet and urge the public to rely on “official communications from the police and other authorities”.

We publish confirmed information about the incident continuously on polisen.se. Remember not to spread rumors and speculation. It can complicate the work of the police and create distrust and concern”, they write.

They also state that they do not see any increased general threat or any increased danger to the public after yesterday’s events.

Quran burner Salwan Momika shot dead in Sweden during livestream

The now murdered Salwan Momika, during one of his demonstrations.

Iraqi Salwan Momika, known for burning the Koran in Sweden on several occasions, was shot dead on Wednesday night in an apartment in Hovsjö, Södertälje.

According to unconfirmed reports, the murder took place during a live broadcast on TikTok.

Police were alerted to the scene shortly after 11pm on Wednesday night after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Salwan Momika badly shot and lifeless in the apartment. Despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to reports from several media outlets, Momika was broadcasting live on TikTok when the attack occurred. Viewers report hearing several shots being fired before the broadcast was abruptly cut off.

– Police are alerted to a suspected shooting inside an apartment building in Hovsjö. At the scene, police find a man in his 40s who has been hit by shots and the man is taken to hospital, the police wrote in a statement on their website during the night.

Five people arrested

Police have launched an extensive investigation and cordoned off a large area around the crime scene. Five people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder, but police have not yet released details of the suspects or possible motives.

Salwan Momika, 38, became known to the public in 2023 when he repeatedly burned Korans in public places in Sweden. His actions provoked strong reactions both nationally and internationally, and also led to diplomatic tensions between Sweden and several Muslim countries.

According to the Bonnier newspaper Expressen, the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has also been involved due to the murder.

– In general terms, we have close cooperation with the police. But when it comes to this particular operation, it is a police matter, says Gabriel Wernstedt, press spokesman at Säpo.

Links to Mossad and Israel?

In addition to the Koran burnings, Salwan Momika has also been accused by the Iranian intelligence service of working for the Israeli security service Mossad, something that The Nordic Times reported early on.

In a statement from July 2023, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence announced in a strong tone, via the official state news agency Islamic Republic News Agency, that the then 37-year-old Momika’s desecration of the Koran also in itself constituted an action by the Israeli security service.

The purpose was said to have been, among other things, to create “media waves” to divert attention from Israel’s actions in the West Bank at the time (this was before October 7 that year).

Strong reactions

The sentencing of Salwan Momika and his accomplice Salwan Najem, scheduled for later today, has been postponed indefinitely following the murder.

Police are appealing to the public to come forward with tips and information that could help the investigation. They are particularly interested in testimonies from people who may have seen something suspicious in the area around Granövägen in Hovsjö on Tuesday evening and Wednesday night.

The murder has provoked strong reactions on social media, with both supporters and critics of Momika expressing their views on his own thematic issues of freedom of expression and Islamization in Sweden. Police say they are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any retaliation or unrest.

Sweden’s justice minister proposes lowering the criminal age to 14

The Minister of Justice believes that it is important that victims of crime feel that they are getting justice.

The Swedish age of criminal responsibility should be lowered from the current 15 to 14 years. This is the opinion of Gunnar Strömmer, Minister for Justice.

If we could see that we were really able to prevent children and young people from being drawn into crime under the current system, this might not be as important. But we have seen a development in the last 10-15 years that is pulling in the opposite direction, he explains in the state television SVT Agenda.

In his argument, he highlights the fact that the average age of criminal responsibility in Europe is 14 years – and that in many European countries it is significantly lower than that.

– The punishment is an incredibly central part of justice for the victim. Behind every number is a victim and their loved ones, who, because we are unable to impose a penalty, are also unable to receive justice, he continues.

“Not an effective tool”

In 2023, the governing center-right coalition parties launched an investigation to review the possibility of lowering the age of criminal responsibility. Today, Tuesday, the investigator presents his conclusions.

At the same time, the opposition is deeply critical of a reduction and the Center Party’s spokesperson on legal policy, Ulrika Liljeberg, believes that lowering the age of criminal responsibility “is not an effective tool”.

It is not punishment that deters 14-year-olds, they do not have that consequential thinking, she argues.

2025 could set a record for bombings in Sweden

Deteriorating safety

Over one blast a day in Sweden, according to January's disheartening statistics (archival image 2023).

At the beginning of 2025, Sweden has seen an alarming increase in explosions, with an average of one bombing per day. The negative trend raises concerns that this year could be a dismal record year.

As of January 27, 2025, 27 bombings have occurred in the country. The figure indicates an upward trend compared to 2024.

The latest bombing took place overnight, when an explosion was triggered at an apartment building in Bro, northwest of Stockholm. One person was reportedly slightly injured in connection with the blast.

A young man has been arrested for the blast, suspected of attempted murder and criminal damage.

“It has escalated”

In 2024, police reported a total of 317 blasts (detonations, attempts and preparations) – a slight decrease from 351 in 2023. The escalation and increase underline the seriousness of the situation and the need for effective action.

– It has escalated in December and January, where we see a sharp increase in bomb violence, Erik Lindblad, national operations manager at the police, told the tax-funded SVT.

The police have intensified their efforts to counteract the trend, but the problems remain.

– It is an unreasonably high number of bombings, absolutely, says Erik Lindblad.

Reports of another bombing, in Nacka, east of Stockholm, have been received. This would be the 28th such attack this year.

Innocent people are increasingly affected

Several of the recent bombings have taken place in residential areas. Fortunately, the majority of these incidents have not resulted in personal injuries, but many have caused significant material damage, along with the psychological impact such bombings have on civil society.

However, serious injuries have become more common as bombings increase, coupled with the fact that criminals have become more reckless, showing little regard for who is affected. For example, in September 2023, a 25-year-old woman died after a bombing in Fullersta, north of Uppsala.

The government has announced tougher penalties for bombings and increased support for the police in the form of resources and powers. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer has repeatedly emphasized in the media the importance of reversing the negative trend and restoring safety in society. Despite the claimed political efforts, the criminal gangs’ use of bombs and explosives in society continues to rise.

Experts warn that if the current trend persists, 2025 could set a record for the number of bombings in Sweden.
