Epadunk artist “Miss Snusk” (Miss Filth), known for songs like Ride Me Like a Dalecarlian Horse and Stripping in Your Living Room, will take part in Melodifestivalen 2024, the winner of which will be Sweden’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The selection of this artist has sparked criticism of the program, which has traditionally been seen as family-friendly.

The artist made a name for herself in the fall of 2022 with vulgar songs about sex and drunkenness, where she wears a pink balaclava to protect her identity (a nod to gangster rapper 1.Cuz). Her songs now have more than 65 million streams on Spotify.

– She was one of the first to be informed that she was in, a source told Schibsted newspaper Aftonbladet, which was the first to reveal the artist’s participation.

Due to the sexual nature of her music, some industry insiders find it surprising that Swedish state broadcaster SVT would include such an artist in a supposedly family-friendly program.

– I don’t really know how SVT is going to handle this in a nice way. It’s definitely not going to be easy, a person with knowledge of the program told the newspaper.

Disappointed viewers

A person involved in the program says it could be sensitive because of the artist’s sexual songs, but that it will be “interesting”.

– It will be interesting to see which song she does. SVT is usually sensitive and her music is usually very much about sex. At the same time, you want Miss Snusk to do what she is known for, not something mediocre, because artists who compromise usually don’t do so well, the person says.

Swedish Hollywood wife Gunilla Persson will also participate in Melodifestivalen 2024, and the choice of these two artists means that some Swedes won’t even watch the program and are ashamed to be Swedish.

Other artists that have been announced to take part are Lasse Stefanz, Smash into pieces, Samir and Viktor and Marcus & Martinus. Melodifestivalen will be broadcast on SVT on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Epadunk, a Swedish music genre emerging in the early 2020s, is a blend of various musical styles, notably eurodisco, eurodance, electronic dance music (EDM), könsrock, and smurfhits. It's strongly associated with so called EPA tractors and A-tractors: slow-moving vehicles, often with powerful sound systems, popular among rural Swedish youth.

The genre is known for its fast-paced beats and humorous, often explicit lyrics that typically revolve around themes like sex, alcohol, cars, and rural life. Gaining significant popularity, Epadunk has made its way from being played on EPA tractor sound systems to topping Spotify's charts in Sweden.
