The assault in Morö Backe in Skellefteå this summer has received a lot of attention. The girl who was attacked is Luna, who is now 10 years old is still in hospital and has permanent brain damage.

Ethiopian Abushi Shamse strangled Luna with her own shoelaces and sexually assaulted her. Then he left her to die. As the family speaks out about the terrible time after the attack, it is described as a nightmare.

– Sure, she’s alive, but it’s far from good. She’s alive in the sense that she’s breathing on her own but she can’t move, she can’t talk, she can’t do anything, her aunt Emma, who is representing the family, says to a Swedish newspaper.

It is unclear how long Luna lay injured on the ground. She was found in the wooded area with no clothes on, with her own shoelace around her neck. 15-year-old Abushi Shamse has been sentenced to forensic psychiatric care for raping her and attempting to kill her.

Now the family has started a fundraising campaign to ensure Luna gets the help she needs and can do fun things. Emma says it’s a way of “reclaiming life”.
