Almost 70% of Norwegians believe that Princess Märtha Louise should not be allowed to keep her title. At the same time, support for the Norwegian monarchy is at a record low.
Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise has long been criticized for, among other things, using her title in social media collaborations and to advertise products. As early as 2019, King Harald decided that she could no longer use her title at all in commercial contexts, and in 2022 that she could no longer represent the royal family.
However, the Princess has not heeded the King’s calls and recently chose to sell the rights to her wedding to Netflix and the British weekly Hello, along with her new husband and ‘shaman’ Durek Verrett.
The actions have now received a clear response from the Norwegian people, with 69% saying she should be stripped of her royal title, according to a poll by Norwegian state broadcaster NRK. Only 16% think she should keep it.
Support for the Princess is also low among those who want to keep the monarchy in Norway, with 63% saying she should lose her title.
Big changes
Furthermore, support for the Norwegian monarchy is at a record low – in the last two months, support has fallen from 68% to 62%. In 2017, 81% of Norwegians wanted to keep the royal family.
Despite a drop in support for the monarchy, King Harald receives top marks from Norwegians, with an average rating of 9.3 on a scale of one to ten. Princess Märtha Louise instead receives an average rating of 3.1.
The survey was conducted between September 3-5 with 1,011 participants.
