Frederik 10 is now king of Denmark. Queen Margrethe has signed her abdication and handed over the throne to her son.

The transfer of the throne took place at a meeting of the Council of State at 14 on Sunday, when the former queen Margrethe signed a declaration of abdication in front of the ministers, the secretary of state and now king Frederik and crown prince Christian.

– God save the king, Margrethe said afterwards, reports Danish state broadcaster DR.

Later, King Frederik X stepped out onto the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, where prime minister Mette Fredriksen announced the change of throne.

– The Crown Prince, who now becomes our regent, is a king we know, a king we like and a king we trust, she said.

King Frederik X paid tribute to his mother in his first speech as King, saying it was “a responsibility I accept with respect, pride and great joy”.

– Connected, committed to the Kingdom of Denmark, he said.

Queen Margrethe has been regent of Denmark since January 14, 1972, making her 52 years on the throne and the longest reigning monarch in Danish history.
