A leaked internal document reveals a plan by the EU’s socialist group, the S&D, to counter the popularity and rise of conservative and nationalist parties in Europe.
The strategy includes pressuring Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s centrist EPP group to remain loyal to the bloc – and to keep anti-establishment parties out of any influence.
The strategy is outlined in a five-page confidential document leaked on social media, which broadly aims to ridicule and freeze out national conservative parties, and make the idea of working with them more uncomfortable for the EPP.
This includes identifying issues that can be used to “drive a wedge” between them, insisting on deeper cooperation with liberal Renew and the Greens, and generally being “more assertive” in rebuking the EPP. In addition, the plan includes “measures” to ensure that the establishment parties’ previous agreement to isolate the conservative right will continue to hold.
“We should identify and leverage all those issues which can drive a wedge between the extreme right and the EPP”, the S&D internal strategy says. It advises its own members not to be “overly aggressive”, but at the same time declares that the center-right EPP “must know there will be consequences to looking both ways”.
Support from the extreme left
The document also states that the European Patriots and ESN groups should be automatically excluded from decision-making whenever possible and that socialist MEPs should refrain from interrupting or responding to their representatives on the floor – thus minimizing their speaking time.
It also calls on its members to try to prevent Conservative MEPs from gaining access to seats on parliamentary trips abroad, and intends to continue to do what it can to keep Conservatives and nationalists out of any position of power and influence.
If the Socialists, Left-Liberals, Greens and Ursula von der Leyen’s EPP themselves do not have the majority to get a decision through, the strategy says they should also involve the far left – rather than seeking support from conservative and anti-immigration parties.

“Worse than how AfD is treated”
Isolating Meloni’s ECR group is a bit “complicated”, according to documents, as it includes both “mainstream” and “anti-European” parties, so the Socialists are asked to take a position on them “on case-by-case approach”.
According to Anders Vistisen of the Danish People’s Party and PfE, the plan shows that the left-wing parties are very worried about the rise of the national-conservative right, and want to do everything they can to ensure that uncomfortable voices continue to be frozen out.
– They don’t want us to co-sign amendments, they don’t want us to participate in the leading bodies of Parliament, they’d even exclude us from going on committee trips to represent our voters.
– The length that they are going to isolate us is far beyond that you see in any normal functioning parliament. It is worse than how AfD is treated in Germany or National Rally in France. It’s worse than anything that you would find in any society that defines itself as democratic, he continued.
